Harley usually didn't wear their cochlear implants in the Cobblestone Cafe. Typically they were either coming from their downtown apartment or the gym, and they didn't really wear their hearing aids in either of those settings very often. Today, though, Harley was getting coffee on their way to their parents' house.
"Hey!" Harley greeted Jess, then gestured at the cochlear implants so she knew he could hear her. He didn't catch everything she said, he rarely did when talking at a counter like this one, but he caught enough to respond. "I'll do my regular, and a vanilla cold brew for my mom. Heading to my parents' house when we're done here."
Jess's face lit up the moment Harley stepped up to the counter. The pair always got along fairly well throughout school. "Hey, Harley!" she greeted warmly, instinctively slowing her speech just a touch and making sure she was facing him as she talked. When he gestured toward his cochlear implants, she gave him an understanding nod. "Got it," she said with a smile. "Regular for you, vanilla cold brew for your mom." Jess reached for the corresponding cups for those drinks and swirled their names on each cup in pretty font. "A visit to the parent's, eh? Anything special or did you get that 'hey, come by when you get a chance' text and they need something fixed usually the computer? Or maybe that's only my mom that does that..." Jess joked and laughed softly, making sure to stay facing Harley so her lips could be seen.
