itsxadamharperâ:
Adam nodded. âWell, yeah, thatâsâŚthatâs mostly what I mean,â he said. âI donât really, um, go to the movies that much. I donât think Iâve been inâŚâ He paused to think. âMaybe, uh, ten years or so? A lot of them seem juvenile too. Like those, um, American Pie movies. I never really found those very funny.â
Jess exhaled hard through their nose and threw their hands up in the air. âWell, thereâs your problem! Youâre structuring your bias around that wretched series of toilet humor, bad sex jokes, and... and...â They grunted. âIâm so worked up, I canât even think of a third adjective!â Jess rummaged through their purse for a small book, then tore out a page. It was about double the size of a post-it. They started to write a list. âHow old are you?â they asked.
lenorefitzpatrickâ:
âYeah, Iâm that typical woman who loves sweet drink knowing that itâs bad for you,â Lenore shrugged her shoulders and laughed, she wasnât very big on strong alcohol, to begin with, and if she seemed like a wimp when it came to alcohol, so be it. âEveryone loves receiving gifts, itâs like some weird happy emotion one feels, I for one know I enjoy receiving gifts.â
âHallelujah for that.â Lucky for Lenore, Jess liked all drinks. From straight whiskey to the frilliest mango margarita, theyâd try them all. Jess smirked. Theyâd been trying to make her feel better about coming empty-handed but if she was going to argue, they would mess with her instead.Â
âFine,â they said, âthen youâre a bad friend for not bringing me a proper gift. Youâre banished from these birthday proceedings.â They giggled and sipped the drink again, then ate a slice of pineapple from the toothpick dangling from its rim.
calxmckenzieâ:
Cal couldnât help but laugh at the youngerâs enthusiasm, taking a sip of his own drink. He hadnât been to a party like this in a while, and he was pretty sure he was quite a bit older than most of the other partygoers. But that was alright by him. He chuckled as Jess vaulted over the booth to greet him, grinning. âDoes something to eat count?â he said. âThereâs gotta be some food around here and youâve been going nonstop, you must fancy at least a nibble, eh?â
Jessâ expression changed from jubilation to intense focus at the mention of food. Alcohol turned them into a cartoonish version of themself. âFood,â they echoed desperately, âIâm so glad you came. You have the best ideas. I accept your offer but Iâm going to level with you, I have no idea which way the bar is from here.â They were 5â˛2âł, too short to see over the crowd so they linked arms with Cal and pulled him toward a chair they could stand on. âThey say you stop growing at 27. Hereâs hoping I get six inches in the three years I have left,â Jess said, grabbing Calâs shoulder and hauling themself up. âI see the buffet table!â
tom-carvellâ:
âI had to do a book signing in Seattle and it was just a row of coffee shops than a bookstore at the end.â He chuckled. â How any of them sleep is beyond me. I barely like coffee, Iâm more of a tea guy myself.â Tom admitted and chuckled. â I may be old but I can still use my charm when I need to.â He said and then looked down at his book. â Itâs a book about how Britain rebuilt London after the 1666 fire. Iâm an architect by trade so books like this are my favorite. You reading anything at the moment?â
Jess nodded. âI donât think they do,â they said seriously, âThe nightlife is the same, coffee everywhere and itâs packed wherever you go. Seattle just might be full of vampires.â The conclusion was so funny that it made them chuckle.
The barista, although busy, kept trying to catch Tomâs eye. âYouâre not kidding,â Jess noted, âArchitecture?â They made a face. They respected art history and architecture but for the life of them couldnât understand the passion for the profession. âAnna Karenina. Only because I heard itâs brilliant and depressing as hell, which is right up my alley. Ten bucks says she wrote her number on the sleeve,â they added, nodding as they spotted their barista wandering back. She set Tomâs coffee down and hurried away.Â
soo-gabeâ:
Gabe looked at Jess suspiciously, but he did sip at it. He trusted them, after all. He trusted them more than most people to take care of him. âYeah, well, Iâm never going to a bar party again,â he muttered. âNot without you.â
Gabe leaned back and sighed softly, rubbing his forehead. âNo? Iâm shocked,â he said, but then he heard the rest of the sentence and he grimaced. Not because he didnât like it, but because it was justâŚwell, he never liked details of his friendsâ sex lives, but somehow he always had to hear them, anyway. âWell, that doesnât surprise me. But damn, now Iâm jealous that you got to see Tae and I didnât.â he weakly flipped Jess off, but it was fully intended in a playful manner.
âHow is Tae?â
Jess took the flask and set everything down on his night table, then propped Gabeâs arm onto a pillow and curled into the nook theyâd made. They nudged his side with a nagging, ââkay, now the water,â before flipping through the channels. âI am like 85% of your impulse control, so thatâs actually smart,â they went on, their smug smile widening, âFine. Iâll be your chaperone since you asked so nice.âÂ
They laughed at his reaction because they had anticipated it-- ney hoped for it. The look on his face when Fang, Ollie, Tae, or Jess said anything lewd was priceless. In fact, a brief slideshow of his disgusted exasperation was one of their most popular vines. âHeâs good! He misses you and the kid. Sends his love and also is, quote âbegging you to give him more attention on snapchatâ end quote.â Gabe wasnât the best with technology but they expected nothing less from the dad friend.
xoxolennoxâ:
Lennox snorted at Jesseâs antics, grinning at them. âIt is, because I am,â they said, with another grin. âMy presence is a treasure, damn it.â They laughed at the offer, looking over at them. âShouldnât I be dancing on the table for you? Not that Iâm offering, but it is your birthday, after all.â
Jess laughed and slapped the bar. âDag-nabbit, youâre right! On both counts-- Now I insist that you dance for me,â They hooted, though they didnât actually expect her to hop up on the table; not that anyone would object if she did! Jess liked attention under certain conditions. Guests clapped them on the back as they sat down and Jess felt warmed by each one. They called for a couple of shots, took theirs, and held their pinky up to Lennox. âTo life and good health!â
xoxolennoxâ:
âWhoo!â Lennox shouted back dutifully, throwing their arms in the air. They snorted as Jesse repeated the sentiment when the other vaulted over the booth to greet them. âI heard you the first time, weirdo,â they said. âI got you me. Iâm gonna be hungover tomorrow for work thanks to you, but here I am, because itâs your birthday. But I could be persuaded to get you a drink, since itâs a special day and all.â
âWoooo-hoo,â they echoed giddily. Alcohol made them nicer and also about ten times louder than usual. Jess received Lennox enthusiastically and together they made their way through the dense crowd. âWow,â Jess said seriously, looking them dead in the eyes, âYour present. Itâs perfect.â They feigned wiping away a single tear. âJust what I wanted.â
When they couldnât remain stoic anymore, they started to giggle. They were at the bar now. âOkay, challenge accepted. What do I have to do to get a drink out of you? Full disclosure, Iâm one hundred percent willing to dance on this table.â
lenorefitzpatrickâ:
As much as Lenny wasnât very big on the partying scene, she knew she would get crap from Jesse if she didnât show up to celebrate their birthday. âWellâŚsince you were trying to act cute and mysterious on what you wanted, I got you a drink, surprise.â She waved her hands up in the air and slid the drink over towards them, âHonestly though, I suck at giving presents, ask my family.âÂ
Jess accepted the drink and sipped it eagerly. âOoh,â they sang, âthatâs good. Is that mango I taste?â They linked arms with Lenny and took a heartier sip of the drink sheâd given them, licking their lips and looking pensive. âNah, actually I have no clue whatâs in this. But thanks!â They gave her a kiss on the cheek. âGifts are overrated, Iâm happy you came.âÂ
When: Sat. Novemer 9th Where: Downtown @wilmingtonstartersâ
âItâs my birthday!â Jess screamed from the DJ booth, throwing their head back and beating their chest with their fists. A cheer rippled back to them. They really didnât need to make the announcement-- the whole party was for them. Multicolored lights flashed across the dancefloor. The bar was packed with people because everything had been paid for ahead of time. Smoke and bubble machines alternated in every corner, misting partygoers with foam.
Jesse met eyes with someone and vaulted over the booth to meet them in the crowd. âItâs my birthday!â they repeated jubilantly as they approached. It was clear that they were already quite drunk and alive from the festivities. âThanks for cominâ. Whatâdâyou get me?â They said it cheekily, almost expectantly with their arms outstretched.

DATE:Â Â November 18th, 2019. LOCATION:Â Johnnie Mercerâs Pier. OPEN TO:Â Â All.
John Dalton by the ocean was never a rare sight. In fact, itâs practically routine. Without the water, John would be a little more hollow than he already is, somewhere between go and stay. With the sound of shoes against sand-covered decks paired with the noise of lapping waves against the shore, John takes every negative thought and stores them away neatly. Those intrusive thoughts rest high on a shelf somewhere in his mind, left to collect dust until further notice and he had the ocean to thank. Itâs the only time he feels truly content, even as sad as that sounds.
The pier was quiet today, which is usually expected for a Monday afternoon in November. Crisp, cool air circles John and he embraces it with open arms. Even with his love for summer and warmth, there was something special about a chilly day at the beach. John leans against the railing, looking over a little, watching as the water shifts against the hardwood of the pier. His thoughts are interrupted soon enough by an elderly man who begins cursing at a fish heâs just caught. âJesus, I think heâs drunk.â John finally says, cutting through the alluring silence that surrounds him. He turns a little, head canting to the side, eyebrows furrowed in amusement. âFive bucks says he drops the fish on the pier and slips on it. You know, like in cartoons.â John says to the other onlooker beside him.
Jess found all sorts of interesting characters at the pier. Theyâd ran into two con artists and a man in hysterics down here. They didnât know what it was about the pier or perhaps the lunacy radiating off of the Atlantic ocean herself, but Jess did know that they were more likely to run into something to do down by the water.
Jess skated by on their heelys and stopped beside the man dressed in all black with sunglasses on. He looked like heâd just come from a funeral. âIâll take that action,â they said, spinning once the stranger in their rolling shoes. Then, without warning, they pelted off towards the other man on the docks. He yelped in shock as they got closer and lost his grip on a massive, thrashing fish. It flailed powerfully, slapped the man in the forearm and tumbled back into the sea. The drunk fisherman staggered and shook his fist at Jess who was retreating, crowing with laughter. âYou owe me five bucks,â they said, whizzing by the first stranger again.

Heâd been stargazing for a good amount of time now. It was cheesy and clichĂŠ, and he know his sister wouldâve made fun of him, if were not for the fact she was gone off the map. Still, Leo found some comfort in sitting by the bench at the local park and taking a look at the stars. On an Autumn night like this, it made him feel more human, whatever that meant.Â
The courage of stars shining â the light reaching his features ever so softly even though they were billions of years apart. The softness of it: it changed anyone who paid attention to the sky. He wouldâve brought an astronomy book, hadnât it made him look silly. Sometimes, Leo could point at the constellations â sometimes, he could decipher a few of them, proudly so.
Noticing a figure sitting nearby, he took pride in knowing he wasnât completely alone tonight. âSorryâ uh,â his hand reached out for his hair, quite embarrassed to be bothering a stranger. âDo you come here to stargaze, too?â A smile plastered upon his features. âI know, itâs embarrassing but⌠I had to ask.â
Theyâd wandered out here to the middle of a grassy knoll so that they could loiter in peace. The universe didnât allow that to happen. As soon as they had finished unloading their bag they noticed another shadowy figure moving on the spacious lawn. Maybe theyâd leave, they thought, but he spoke to them. His voice was deep but soft; they could have ignored him if they wanted.Â
Jess sighed, threw caution to the winds, and tried their best to be polite. âNo,â they answered honestly, holding up a little box with silver spokes on it. They held it in both hands and tapped the spokes deftly-- out of it tinkled the Legend of Zelda theme song. âCame out here to play without bothering anyone,â they smiled, and laughed too for good measure in case he couldnât see their face and took their next comment too seriously, âSo if Iâm bothering you, keep it to yourself.â Belatedly, they noticed the stars as they lay down flat and kept plinking at the kalimba.
