Our story is one of calling, courage, and collaboration. We choose to use our gifts and talents to see broken lives renewed, the oppressed set free and people educated on the power of their buying choices.
Purpose Boutique
Purpose Boutique is a retail clothing store that focuses not only on style, but also loving, serving, and giving generously to those in need. Similar to Better World Books, in which “social and environmental responsibility are the core of [its] business - in [its] DNA,” Purpose Boutique also has a social mission central to its business model.
Purpose Boutique comes to mind when I think about leadership branding. One of my friends from college decided to join Purpose as a co-founder and COO of the organization. She believed in the mission and vision of Purpose, and it was aligned with her personal and professional goals. In both her personal life and career, she has found a way to brand her leadership as one with purpose to empower disadvantaged people through holistic support and by providing them with dignified work. In the long-run, this could be a point-of-difference that she could use to establish her business career and leadership brand. Empowering people who have been disadvantaged or exploited around the world is an incredible, noble mission, not only for Purpose Boutique, but also for an individual career.
As with all companies that place social or environmental missions at the heart of their brand, the key to success is socially conscious consumers. Thus, these companies (e.g. Toms, Ethos Waters, etc.) are “voting with their dollars” for a better world, in some shape or form. A point of weakness in this is a reliance on a trend in consumer preferences and spending habits toward socially conscious purchasing. However, with a close watch on consumer insights, these companies can stay on top of changing industry dynamics.
