Cornell Univeristy -World’s largest natural sound archive now fully digital and fully online.

These are incredible, it is the largest and oldest collection of audio recordings in the world, and now available to anyone

I particularly enjoyed the Curl-crested Manucode from New Guinea, they described it as the “most likely to be mistaken for aliens arriving” haha

#020 Post final crit.

The layout of the crit was divided into three sections:

First, our group with Judy went up to the labs and explored each others homes using BIMX. This was so much fun. I went for a wonder around a couple of others homes. One of them was Z's home. His house was designed for his cyborg hunting cyborgs. I found it was interesting, but to echo what was mentioned during his crit - it seemed like he hadn't developed his home enough. Like what Rebecca said, it would have been interesting to see these hooks focused on, as they were the central object of the home. I also went around Gina's cyborgs home. I loved the thick, dense concrete textured walls, and this glimpse of emotion and normality of the coloured celestial wall in the cyborgs bedroom.

The second section, we sat in on the final crit for Va. From what I gathered 'Va' was the relationship between people and land. During someones crit, their tutor said something that linked to what Judy said during the BIMX part. About others experiencing the space you have created and how it may or may not be how you intended it. One point that did stand out, was the need for a combined photo of the built model and the photo of the landscape they were working with. To tie the two together, and to begin to understand how the two intersect.

The third section was our crit. I was quite please at how mine went. However, Judy did mention again that I hadn't pushed the external shape of my home enough. On reflection, I think perhaps I should have gone with the burrows idea. As they weren't so uniform. She also mentioned that what was really interesting was the spaces in between. The spaces that were a result of my structure. Thinking back I am kind of surprised that I didn't take the time to look at these.

#019 Final crit posters.

I decided that although Judy mentioned only having one third of your images rendered, that because I was dealing with light and shadows, I did in fact need these rendered picture to get the interior feeling across.

I thought this applied to my cyborg's home, as every book would be purposefully placed. Every angle, thought out. Although the house is adaptable to be completely rearranged, I wanted to show that it was only this shape because the cyborg chose it to be this way.

I liked this quote, as it reminded me of my initial concept. My cyborg changes and passes on information to me. It was this exchange that I was interested in.

#018 Importing my cyborg.

YAY. I have taken a few shots of my cyborg interacting with the space.

The second picture down is depicting my cyborg in his private space. Where he will sleep and retreat to.

The fourth picture down is my cyborg crawling around the walls. I am pretty stoked with this photo.

Next photo is depicting my cyborg taking out a book from the wall - thus creating a window

I have also added a few cross sections, to show the scale of the house.

OK, so since my last burrowing idea didn't work out, I was thinking about creating one private space for my cyborg to retreat to.

Situated underneath the meeting space.

The exterior walls will be glass, and enclosing a house made of stacked books.

If the cyborg removes books from the wall - a window will be created.

I wanted the shape to be divided between our meeting space vs his private space - indicated by the bend in the walls.

I was interested in the idea of a hidden treasure - being my library, in this post apocalyptic setting. So I was drawn to the kind or shape similar to a faberge. This beautiful ornament type of structure.

#013 New concept.

As you can see from my two sketches, I was playing around with the idea of burrows. Making complete rooms and passages with these stacked books.

In the first sketch I was thinking that the majority of the cyborgs house/ space set under the earth. The outside appearance of the house would be is a uninspired, overlooked dome. The interesting stuff would start underneath the earth. These slim corridors and carved out rooms would all have been made by the cyborg, all adaptable for him to change and renovate to change with his different needs at different times. I wanted to keep the floating level as my meeting place for me and my cyborg. The interior of the dome would be just as bare as its exterior. And yet the interesting part of the house would be out of my reach, below me, that only the cyborg could maneuver around.

My second sketch was bringing this concept above the grounds surface. So now, from the outside, it looked like a massive pile of discarded and unorganized books. But from the interior, my cyborg has strategically placed every book in its perfect place. I guess playing with the idea of chaos and harmony. To everyone else this is a mess, but to him, and only him, it is perfectly ordered.

I tried to start making these homes on Archicad. But as you can see from the images, it has already become to cluttered and hard to differentiate between the stacking levels. So I think I need to start a new idea, or It will give me a heart attack.

I was quite pleased with the feedback this morning. As last night I felt overwhelmed and didn't know what direction to move in.

Although I would have liked to insert the original crawling cyborg in my image, the idea and activity I wanted to evoke came through in the group crits, so I feel I am on the right track

#010 Playing around with book stacks.

After a constructive chat with Judy yesterday afternoon, I spun around in my chair and walked up and down the corridor a few thousand times trying to remodel my cyborgs home. She also enforced moving AWAY from the standard structures I had created as a base. So I started to think about creating an entire room with these book stacks. At first I wanted to created the same texture from the stacked books onto a slab. But I couldn't work out how to subtract them or imprint them. But then I thought 'why not just use THEM' to create different levels, rooms, and burrows.

I then ripped away the walls, and started to layer and stack at different elevations to create a room around my cyborg. So not only could this be a room, but also a staircase for my cyborg to move around in.

I added this photo of one of Escher's pieces to use as a influence the arrangement of books.

#009 Thursdays Crit & Poster.

After the crit this morning, and having a one on one with Rebecca, I realised I need to move away from these formal and uniform spaces. I was thinking about exploring burrows- my cyborg would go and retrieve books from these underground spaces he had created, and bring them back to me.

Although this is my cyborg's home, I would visit him there to utilise his activity . Because the home doesnt have a normal door for me to enter through, I like the idea that i would have to climb (in some way that I haven't quite thought of) up the exterior walls and maybe harness myself down to that first floating level. This would be a meeting place for me and my cyborg, but also it would be a restricted place for me as I cant get to any other areas of the cyborgs house as there is no stairs.

Also I was thinking of totally eliminating the four attached corridors and circular rooms from above ground. Thus, just working with this kind of network of burrowed space hidden from site, below the ground.

#008 Playing around with building firs home.

I started working with this central area, tall walls with an opening only at the top to climb through, and provide light. I started playing around with using the book stack object in archicad. I wanted to fill the interior from floor to roof with them. As you can see in the last two photo, the green mesh looks really interesting and textural, as does the rendered photo. Unfortunately, I decided it would take far too long (literally hours) to even cover just one straight wall, not to mention getting them inside the circular rooms. Instead I decided to use apply a texture of books to get a similar effect.

#007 Beginning sketches of cyborg house.

Because my cyborgs activity relies on books, I imagined its home to resemble both a Victorian style library, andsome type of post apocolyptic bunker - having tall ceilings, long corridors, and an immeasurable number of books.

I want minimal natural lighting only. I played around with using a oculus roof. I also want to the home to be sitting half underneath the grounds surface.

As I mentioned in my last post, I have decided that I do not need stairs or even perhaps a front door since my cyborg can crawl up walls. So instead, I have designed to have three floating circular slabs/ levels in the central room. Each one designated to a specific need - bedroom, bathroom, kitchen & lounge. (Not entirely sure yet if my cyborg really NEEDS any of these.)
