The last time he had seen her the Italian had made one of the biggest mistakes of his life. Heād sacrificed their friendship. Now he sat silently on the steps outside her place as he waited for her car to pull into the driveway. The Italian shifted the gun on his hip as he leaned forward and placed his head in his hands.
āNothingās wrong, Passagero. I just made a mistake. Iām sorry.ā āThat was one hell of a mistake.ā
Her words echoed in his head once more as he mulled over the real reason. The real reason had been because he had been spiraling. Falling fast into something that he wouldnāt have been able to get himself out of. His mistake with Jess had been the wake-up call he had needed. The one that pulled him out of his funk and set him back on the straight and narrow.
Nathanielās decision to tell Fran about Erin being his sister had been plaguing him. For days, nights, weeks he waited for the other shoe to drop. Then one did but it wasnāt the one he was looking for The St. Clairās got a daughter back and Nate had found himself feeling angry, jealous almost. They had once again found themselves exactly where he wanted to be ā with the people they loved.
Tires crunched in the driveway making the Italians head lift from the position it was in. Jessās car. A small pitiful smile pulled on his lips. If she punched him when she got out of the car he wouldnāt blame her. Nate nodded his head as he rose from his seated position and started towards her.
āI think itās time we talked, I crossed a line, I shouldnāt have and then I lied to cover it up. I wasnāt okay and I want to explain why. Only if you want to hear it because you have every right to send me packing.ā
āThereās a guy on our doorstep.ā
Until the words of her fiancĆ© brought her back to reality, Jess had been lost in Valence as it sped past the car windows. No matter how much time she spent in Sicily, every time she returned to the city, it still felt like the home sheād once loved. And she hated it.
āHuh?ā
The car slowed down as it pulled into the familiar street. Sure enough, Hawk-Eye over there had been spot on. Though it took a few more seconds, and a couple of extra meters, she soon realized that said guy was Nate.
Her stomach dropped at the thought. That was never something sheād thought seeing Nate would make her feel. Their last encounter hadnāt exactly gone the way sheād imagined it would, however, and the last thing she needed was to confront the issue with Franco sat right beside her. He didnāt exactly strike her as the kind of guy, even with his laid-back Sicilian attitude, that would be okay with someone else asking his future wife out on a date...probably one to keep to herself.
āItās Nate,ā she said, trying her best to sound enthused at the idea of seeing her friend.
āWhat, he didnāt think to call ahead first and check you were home?ā
Jess shrugged, pressing her fingertips into her eyes. She was too tired to deal with this. The car pulled into the driveway, but she remained seated inside until Franco had finally wrangled Silvano and his seat out of the back. Finally, even though her brain was telling her to make up an excuse to get the fuck out of there, she clambered out of the passengerās side and made her way to the door with Franco.
āIāll be in, in a minute,ā she assured with a smile, handing him the keys.
Thank God he at least waited for the man to head inside before he launched into his rant.
āJust...can you keep your voice down,ā Jess urged, as he referred to their previous exchange, finally looking at him now. āIām not going to send you packing, Nate, shut up. I just want to move past it, all right? If getting whatever it is on your chest off of it helps, then sure. Iām all ears.ā
