Sex Education is Important and your body is your choice when it comes to pregnancy... but what about STDs?
I’m not sure if we talk about the realities of STDs enough. I don’t think we all have accurate information about it either. I think we hear TONS about how it’s a HUGE responsibility to practice safe sex because a child is an immense responsibility… But STDs?.. that’s gross and that wouldn’t happen to me. I know who I sleep with! But do you really?
Did you know about 1 in 15 sexually active women are diagnosed with chlamydia? This is only of the women who get tested and more women get tested than men! (How many men do you know having unprotected sex with more than one partner and not getting checked for over a year?) This is not only putting yourself at risk, but potentially others. Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are the two most common STDs and all you have to do to be tested for them is pee in a cup? Even better news, chlamydia and gonorrhea are EASY to cure with just an antibiotic! But they are easy to spread and contract through oral, anal and vaginal sex. (Wrap your willie before a blowie next time!)
Okay… but what’s the cost? The scary thing about chlamydia in particular is the fact that it usually goes unnoticed. It can cause abnormal discharge and a burning sensation when you pee, but most of the time there are little to no symptoms. This sneaky infection can be passed so easily simply because people have no idea they have it.
But seriously? No symptoms? Then what’s the big deal? Well, chlamydia if undetected for a long period of time can cause permanent infertility. So better yet, you can’t have kids when you want to…
Since it is the most common STD and it goes under the radar so easily it is SO BEYOND IMPORTANT THAT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO SEX!
If you are sexually active it is your civic duty to the sexually active community to be safe. ESPECIALLY if you are engaging in hook-up culture…
This includes BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO….
A yearly screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea
When entering a monogamous relationship– go get tested together before having unprotected sex
Even if it’s been less than a year, go get tested if you’ve had unprotected sex with someone that you are not in a monogamous relationship with.
It is so much better to find out now and knock it out with an antibiotic than to find out three months down the line knowing that you may have given it to people who trusted you to be safe. Protect yourself and other. Go have fun.
TL;DR – Safe sex is the best sex. Always use protection. Get tested often. Have fun fuxking
