Jessie was the first Irish winner of the Best Leading Actress for Hamnet at the 98th Academy Awards last night!

She gave an amazing acceptance speech too! It had me in tears:

“Thank you to the incredible women I stand beside. I am inspired by your art and your heart and I want to work with everyone single one of you.

To the producers who created this ship for us to stand in and my shipmates for life: Hilda, Jessica, Lindy, Zach: none of this is possible without you.

My family…my Irish family…they’re all here! Ireland bought them flights!! Mum, Dad, thank you for teaching us to dream to never be defined by expectation, but to carve from your own passion.

You…Fred, I love you, man. I love you. You are the most incredible dad. You’re my best friend and I want to have 20,000 more babies with you. I do!

And to Isla, my little girl who is 8 months, and who has absolutely no idea what’s going on and is probably dreaming of milk…but this is kind of a deal…and I love you and I love being your mum and I wait to discover life beside you.

Chloe and Maggie, to get to know this incandescent woman and journey to understand the capacity of a mother’s love is the greatest collision of my life. It’s Mother’s Day in the UK today so I want to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.

We all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds. Thank you for recognising me in this role. This is the greatest honour. I can’t even believe it.”

Interview With Deadline (February 2026)

Jessie had a funny interview with Deadline last month chatting about her agent, Lindy King, and her journey so far!

“When we go to the cinema, or we go to the theater, we listen to a story, we’re holding our unspoken feelings beside each other… That’s the great mystery of why stories are important and needed in culture.”

Apparently Jessie’s favourite protein bar snack is called Perfect Bar so yay for unintentional product placement!

When asked by her agent at 22 whether she wanted to go to the US to explore options, she initially said no.

“I said, ‘No, I’m not ready. I don’t think so.’ And I wasn’t ready, but I love that I said that. I needed more time to know myself. And I think I was scared. It’s intimidating. And it felt so foreign and exotic and far away at that time. So, I needed time to learn, and I did,”

This interview is super interesting to read! You really get to see inside Jessie’s head and I’d personally love to see a musical written by her!!

“I love singing. What’s fun is in between jobs, I go to my dirty secret basement and write, and I have no need, apart from to feel free in it. Whether I’ve done it in a small club in Camden, or I’ve done Cabaret in the West End, it’s so part of me. And I’d love to marry that with cinema. It would be such a nice thing to have done in my life.

I’d love to do a new musical. I think about the sound of London. And get Radiohead to do the music. But they’re far too cool.”

TBT: Jessie already had lots of experience of Shakespeare years before Hamnet! I had the honour of watching her live as Miranda in The Tempest back in 2013! IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!

| Full Backstage Interview (March 15th 2026)

After winning her Best Leading Actress award, Jessie walked down the famous Winner’s Walk! It’s basically a long corridor after coming off stage to give the winner a moment to themselves before they enter the backstage press room.

Here’s some of the questions and answers that were given:

Q: Hamnet is about a mother’s love and a mother’s grief. How special does today feel?

A: It feels like some kind of crazy alchemy that all of these things are colliding on a day like today. My daughter got her first tooth this week. I woke up with her lying on my chest, snuggling me and I feel like what a gift to get to explore motherhood through this incredible mother that Anas is and was…and then to become one myself. To receive this recognition of the incredible role mothers play in our world on this day is something I will never ever forget.

Q: Listen, you’ve become history by becoming the first Irish woman to win Best Actress, but what is your message for your family, your friends, your fans, all back home in Ireland and Kerry, who stayed up all night celebrating your win this evening?

A: Don’t go to bed! Keep partying! That’s what I’m going to do! I’m so grateful for the support and I feel the love, man. I feel it. I feel it from young people and old people, from women and men, and from my family. To be here tonight with all my family who’ve literally flown in from New Zealand and Australia and Kerry and Dublin…that makes it real. They’re the people who built me and to share this moment with them and know that back home are either drunk or staying up. I’m delighted for us all.

Q: Hamnet is a film the audience will remember for its emotional depth and sensitivity. So, how do you think this role will stay with you personally?

A: Well, I think all my roles stay with me. I don’t ever want to let go of the incredible women that have really given me an education that I’ve been looking for as a woman. Um, but I think this role cracked a kind of tenderness in me that sometimes if you’re a strong woman, you’re perceived as just being strong, but actually tenderness is as vibrant and strong as strength. And I think to know that through this woman where she was able to hold this capacity of strength and vulnerability and tenderness and grief and love in all its epic colours. I mean, why would ever want to let that go? It’s something I want to hold on to for the rest of my life.
