Jessica Gerrity moved to Japan almost 20 years ago, without any Japanese language skills under her belt. After learning the language from watching TV, it wasn’t long before she found herself working as a television host herself, as well as a kimono model. And now in her spare time, the mother of three also helps run a dojo for kyudo, a form of Japanese archery.

初の着物で弓道動画な気がします。この間のクリスマスディー🎄でとったもので、せっかく母国ではお祝いする日なので着物でお祝いの気分に💙

I think this is the first video I've posted of me doing kyudo in a kimono. This was taken on Christmas Day and I wanted it to be a little special so I wore one of my favourite Edo Komon kimonos.

射という射手の引き方や技術がずっと少しずつ変わっていくと思います。進歩すると変わっていくし、個人的に直したいところがたくさんあって少しずつ引き方をよくするために意識して変えてます😃

An archers technique is forever changing. Change is the only constant in kyudo I think. I constantly strive to improve and perfect different areas of my technique. For me this is part of what I really enjoy. Striving to be a better version of yourself.

You can hear the arrow hit the target if you listen! When the arrow hits the azuchi (the target bank) instead it doesn't really make a sound so thats the way to tell the difference😊

I have an arrow in my ring finger and pinky finger as I shoot. This is my second arrow (tori ya) we shoot in groups of two (hito te).

My kimono sleeves are taken out of the way with a tasuki, a white silk band that I tie around my shoulders that lift the sleeves up.

I think kyudo is about the whole. The shooter the bow and their arrows from the start to the finish of their shooting. Is each movement timed well? Are the movements balanced? Is the arrow balanced? 

とにかく弓道は全体という感じが個人的に強く感じて。射手、弓矢が一体いなるような射目指します。

I think videos and photos are a great way to help improve your technique. Look at yourself from many angles. See what needs improvement. Try working on one area at a time. So from time to time I will post videos of my shooting as a kind of diary for myself😊

写真や動画があると目で見えないところが見えてくる。色んな角度から確認して、直すところ順番で考える✨時々自分の射もこうやって投稿します😃
