mob psycho 100 is a good show because literally all of the characters are lame as hell. all of the villains are established in-text to be adult children who are playing at world domination like a game of make believe. the protagonist is unpopular and awkward. the two people he admires most are his maker of bad decisions nerd brother and a conman. theres a dude who didnt leave his house for 15 years. the evil spirit is a lameass who just wants to be popular. a plot point in the spinoff manga is a bunch of girls becoming friends by sharing their weird and cringe interests. the show’s sex symbol gets dizzy and throws up after one drink and got cancelled on twitter. teru waterboards people wearing a 5 foot wig and gets a fever when he loses fights like some sort of bakugo parody. shou does everything because he hates his dad. and also simps for ritsu. it’s textually stated several times that even the psychic powers aren’t actually that cool

and i just think there’s something very beautiful about that. none of the characters are cool, suave, or super socially competent—but they love each other anyway. they’re achingly human. in looking up to and admiring these characters full of flaws that are considered “cringe,” we learn to accept those qualities in ourselves.
