Life was bleak. Work, home, sleep, repeat. Evergreen was like any other suburb, nothing much to offer for those who weren't family oriented. You had just moved here a little over a year ago for work. The window for making friends had already closed and you didn't bother getting to know anyone outside of work. The weather didn't help either, gloomy clouds constantly raining over you.
It wasn't until recently that you were let off work early and decided to try out a neighboring diner. You had passed it on your way to work often, but never bothered to step inside. The inside was fairly nice, warm colored lights strung all around. You went straight for the bar and took a seat, not wanting to take up any needed space at a booth. Still wearing your work clothes from earlier, you let your hair down as an imaginary weight was lifted off of you.
Today wasn't so bad. You got off work early and stopped for a quick sweat treat, daydreaming about your bed already...
"What can I get you sweetie?" smiled the waitress.
"I'll take a slice of pie and a hot chocolate please."
She nodded before stepping away into the kitchen. You were mindlessly scrolling on your phone before you noticed something, no- someone, out of the corner of your eye. As you lifted your head, your eyes met with a busboy across the room. How long had he been staring at you? Silence filled the room as he quickly fumbled plates into a wash tray.
Cute.
He quickly walked towards the kitchen with his head down, but you could still see his side eye towards you. Ah fuck it you thought, raising your hand to wave at him, giving him a small smile. He quickly snapped his head up before flashing a toothy grin. Though that was before he completely missed the door in front of him and crashed into the wall; plates clattering onto the floor. Ouch.
You stood from your seat at the bar and walked over to help him pick up any remaining plates.
"That looked like it hurt, are you okay?", you said.
The stranger in front of you let out a flustered laugh before replying, "Haha yeah. It happens a lot..."
"What? You staring at people, or you crashing into the wall?"
He paused for a second, taking the question quite literally instead of just laughing it off. "Pretty much both."
"Oh?" you said, arching a brow. He was dead-serious.
"Yeah. Staring tends to anger a lot of people, not sure why though... Like I'm not even doing anything to you bro! That door though? That was just an accident, I swear that shit moves every time I look away."
You stared blankly at the man in front of you, unsure of how to reply next. It wasn't until the waitress came out with your food that she yelled at him to stop pestering customers. He quickly mumbled a sorry before walking away from you. The interaction itself was strange, albeit amusing. You liked how straight forward he was, and as someone with hardly any friends, talking to him seemed like a breeze!
Determined to befriend the awkward busboy, you had ultimately decided to stop at the diner as often as you could without raising any suspicion.

"Hi Sheila!" you said cheerfully, before taking a seat at a booth near the window.
"Hey sweetie, how you been? How was work?" said the waitress before placing down a menu in front of you.
"Slow. Same old, same old..."
"Well Adrian won't be coming in today, just to let you know..."
Your face burned red as you searched for the right words to say. "That obvious huh?"
"I love pie just as much as anyone else doll, but ours really ain't any special."
You laughed, "Well thanks for letting me know."
Ever since your first visit, you'd become a regular at fennel fields. Clearly everyone knew why, everyone but Adrian. You thought for a moment, he didn't seem to have much friends either, so why wasn't he at work today? He had seemingly been missing a lot of work lately, not that you were keeping track or anything- that would be weird. You figured it was finally time to muster up the courage to ask him on a date, hang out outside the restaurant. Originally, your plan was for him to ask first, but he didn't seem to pick up that you only came into fennel fields for him...
The next day, you had put on your most flattering outfit and head right out the door.
"Hi Sheila! Is Adrian here?", you said smiling.
"Well don't you look nice? Lucky for you he's here. He's just around the back taking out the trash."
Perfect.
Being outside saved you the embarrassment of having anyone else witness your attempts at courtship. You placed your arms behind your back as you tiptoed towards the back of the diner. Turning the corner, you noticed Adrian toss a bag of trash into the dumpster before dipping his nose into his phone.
"BOO!" you yelled.
"Holy fuck dude!" he screamed, dropping his phone.
You chuckled before picking up his phone and handing it back to him.
"I thought you said you had a ninja like reflex."
"I do! I was just- uhh busy..." he said, clearing his throat.
Weird.
An awkward silence fell between you two, completely forgetting the reason you came outside in the first place.
"Umm, well I just wanted to ask if you were free Saturday night? I was thinking maybe we could hang out?"
Adrian's eyes widened, "What like a date?".
" Y-yeah, it could be like a date! I mean only if you want it to..." you stuttered.
"Hell yeah I want it to! I got a couple things to do that day, but I can definitely come meet you here and we can go out somewhere."
You sighed in relief at his enthusiasm.
"Okay great! I'll see you then, 8pm." you said walking away. Excitement filled your veins, guess all that work coming to fennel fields finally paid off.
****
You hadn't been this excited in ages. You spent the whole day planning your outfit and getting ready. You felt like a kid the night before a field trip. Taking one last glance in the mirror you left straight for the diner.
"Oh sweetie you look gorgeous! I take it Adrian finally asked you on a date?", said Sheila.
"Yeah something like that..." you giggled before taking a seat at the bar.
A little liquid courage wouldn't hurt, right?
After all, you were a whole fifteen minutes early. Plus, you knew Adrian was a drinker after his multiple hangover complaints from, "blowing shit up with his friends"- whatever that means. When the clock struck 8, you thought nothing of it. Maybe the wait had felt longer because of how early you were?
When the first 15 minutes passed by, you just assumed Adrian had been running late. I mean, why say yes if he was gonna no show, right? I mean he did mention having plans prior to your date, but that wasn't really an excuse after he never showed up at all...

8:30pm hey!! you said to meet at ff's right?
9:00pm adriaaaan
9:15pm dude
9:45pm everything okay????
10:30pm hello??
Embarrassed at his lack of replies, you continued downing drinks until the restaurant closed at midnight. I mean you were free the whole night, might as well make it worth it. Considering the whole staff knew you at this point, it was pretty embarrassing to get stood up like that. You laid your head on the counter as you fell in and out of consciousness.
"Sweetheart we're gonna close up for the rest of the night, is there anything I can get you?" Sheila said with a frown.
It was midnight and still no reply from Adrian.
"No thanks!! I'll get going now, good night Sheila..." you said, trying not to sway as you drunkenly stood up and left a hefty tip.
"Are you sure you're okay to head home?"
"Of course! You know I live nearby, I can handle myself."
You left the diner with what little dignity you had left, mustering up all your strength to look sober in front of the worried waitress. You really didn't think Adrian would do something like this... You felt an ache in your chest, but as disappointed as you were, you were drunk and angry.

12:05am whatthe hekll is yourt probleeem
At this point you were stumbling in the street. You knew how to get home still, but no-one in their right mind would walk home wasted like this. Tears slowly began to form, this would be the last time you'd go to fennel fields, for Adrian at least... You would never ghost Sheila, she was too sweet- AND you would never do that to anyone. As you continued walking, you felt your phone begin to buzz.
Incoming call from adrian c.
"Oh fuck off." you said, immediately rejecting the call.
"Hey- Don't ignore my calls!"
Suddenly a masked stranger had jumped out from the bush in front of you. A sudden shriek escaped your throat before jumping back.
"What the fuck! Who the hell are you."
The masked man held his hands up in defense, "It's me! A- vigilante. I'm a vigilante keeping the streets of Evergreen safe... Wh-what is a lovely lady like you doing all alone at night."
"Beat it creep"you mumbled, before stumbling right past him.
"Wait! Umm- I know Adrian."
Your head snapped back.
"You're friends with that jackass!?" you slurred; rolling your eyes as you crossed your arms to face him.
"Pffft...Noo.... I just, um- he thinks I'm his friend and, yeah."
"Oh."
Silence filled the air as Adrian searched his brain for the right words to say. Clearly, Y/N wanted nothing to do with him at the moment-rightfully so. His mission had run long, if he hadn't been fighting for his life he would've been at fennel fields with you in a heartbeat.
"Let me walk you home."
"How do you know I'm going home?"
"You said you were..."
"No I didn't."
"Yes, you did."
At this point you were getting irritated. Your heels were killing you and for some odd reason you felt safe with the stranger in front of you. You were way too drunk to argue anyways.
"Fine, but you're carrying me."
"DEAL!"
His excitement slightly weirded you out, but you were getting a piggy back ride home. Who were you to complain?
"Here take these." you said, handing him a pair of heels as relief washed over your whole body.
You wrapped your arms around his neck and hopped on his back. You had been freezing earlier wearing only a slip dress, but now the mans back had begun to warm you up. You snuggled into his neck as you began to watch the cars drive by.
"Do you think I'm hot?" you muttered, eyes fully closed.
Adrian choked.
"W-what?"
"Am I hot? Like would you go on a date with me?"
Getting stood up like that had taken a hit on your ego. Anyone in their right mind would've run away from the stranger as soon as he popped out of the bush. You on the other hand? You could care less, any validation would do right now with how drunk you were.
"Of course you're hot! You're like the hottest babe in Evergreen dude."
"Right! Well apparently not... I got stood up tonight like an idiot!! You tell Adrian that he's a fucking asshole alright? Tell him he better not come looking for me, I never want to see him again." you babbled.
"Um, well I bet he wanted to meet you tonight, he was probably just busy..."
"Ya right. That jackass couldn't even text me back! He could've just said no if he didn't want to see me. I waited hours for him!!", at this point you were yelling, yelling right in the poor stranger's ear.
Adrian was at a loss for words now, how could he respond without giving anything away? How would he have the balls to face you again? The guilt was eating away at him.
"I'm sorry he did that to you, you're beautiful."
Tears pricked your eyes at the compliment. If Adrian didn't reciprocate your romantic feelings, you had at least thought you were friends. Something about this being the first time you'd officially be hanging out outside fennel fields hurt your heart. He could've at least texted you back.
"I waited for him..." you cried.
Your tears weren't silent anymore, sniffles filled Adrian's ears. At this point he was rambling with compliments, apologies, and excuses for Adrian. Your silence was beginning to worry him; he didn't realize how upset you'd be over him. It wasn't until he began to hear your soft snores that he realized you were asleep. You had cried yourself to sleep. Relief washed over him as he could now shut up- for once.
Unbeknownst to you, he had tagged your phone with a tracker within a week of knowing you. He knows where all his bff's are, at all times. He also knew where you lived and where you kept your spare key, no it wasn't creepy- he was just... resourceful. As he entered your apartment, he used his leg to kick the door closed behind him. Before tucking you into bed, he had left a bottle of water and some painkillers on your night stand. He also decided to leave a note from Vigilante, explaining that you had let him in, and tucked yourself into bed to prevent any suspicion.
As soon as he reached the door to leave, he skipped right back towards you to leave a kiss on your forehead.
"Sweet dreams Y/N. I'll make it up to you."
