“It’s sorta an odd tradition since they’re not even that great.” Scrunching her nose she nodded. They were rather funny from time to time with just how cringe worthy they could be. “I would have to say peanut butter and chocolate anything. It’s the perfect combination. My dad and I would go through a whole bag of them and watch a stupid romance movie. What about you?” 

“You’ve got me. I’ve got no idea who even came up with them. I just know they show up every Valentine’s Day and some people buy them for some reason.” Jet laughed and shook his head. “Ooh. Yeah that is definitely a good one. One of the best combinations there is. Hmm I don’t know. I like Twizzlers a lot but aren’t really valentines day things.”

Perla sat herself on the bench, looking around at the shops around her. Displays of the up coming holiday made her heart warm, sure. But there was a pulling ache in her chest at just the thought of love. It would always bring her back to her family, to the dances she missed out on being with her father, to the isolation she felt she might have gave herself. When someone spoke to her she looked up at them. “Conversation hearts… they’re cute but really just flavored chalk, don’t you think?” 

“Yeah, I guess so? I’ve never really thought about it. I guess it’s just tradition. Though they also leave a terrible taste in your mouth. But I do find the messages so bad that they’re funny. I guess that counts for something.” Jet shrugged. He didn’t really like Valentine’s day but he could see why some did. “So then what are your favorites?”

Peri sat at the bar, her eyes glued to the television as she contiued to sip on her beer. She spent too many days here but there just wasn’t anything else to do sometimes. The only thing that drew her attention away was the food she ordered being set in front of her, though the reaction of the person beside her was difficult not to notice. Peri couldn’t help but comment on it. ❛ Okay… Hear me out… Pineapple on pizza is taking pizza and making it healthy. ❜ 

“Healthy? Man I think you’ve got it all wrong. Sweet things just don’t belong on a pizza.” He laughed and shook his head, picking at his own bacon and black olive pizza. “I don’t really know if there is a good way to make it healthy.”

Vanessa cocked her head to the side, watching him relax finally. “I have my ways, Jet. I am very good at getting the information I need to take whoever needs to be taken down…down.” His apology made her relax and she took his hand in hers, pulling him closer with it. “I accept your apology,” she said to him before placing a kiss to his cheek. It was intimate and it was soft for her, but Jet deserved that much. She wasn’t soft by any means, but when it came to her boys….well, all bets were off. “Let’s move on from this, yes?”

“I am well aware of that. I just... I want to forget all this stupid shit even happened. It’s not worth our energy. You’ve got bigger fish to fry Nessa.” It felt good to be relaxed for once in what felt like months. Jet hadn’t even realized how tense he had really been. Even in his not entirely sober state, he could feel the ache all the way down to his bones. “Good because I’d just go keep drowning myself in alcohol if you hadn’t.” It wasn’t untrue. But before he could let his own thoughts consume him, he felt her lips press against her cheek. He pulled her in close, only for a few moments, and then sighed. “Yes. Please. I’m done with this for good.”

Vanessa stayed silent, allowing him to get what he needed to say out and process exactly what he was talking about. She couldn’t remember a time she was in harms way recently but her mind did flicker to that one morning where she didn’t remember getting into bed in the first place. Either way, nothing had happened to her or Otis so as far as she was concerned the threat he was given was an empty one. And when she found out who sent it, she was going to make sure her threats were carried out. “I’m alive. And whoever put this fear in you will suffer. I won’t let anyone get away with this, my pet.” She let her hand fall to his shoulder. “Don’t make these choices alone. We are stronger together.”

Jet sighed, feeling his shoulders drop, but this time from relief. He knew Vanessa was right. That he shouldn’t have let his emotions rule over him. But even as much as he was angry with his brother, he didn’t hate him and Vanessa had saved him from the darkest parts of his life and he could never do enough to repay her for it. 2 of the 3 most important people in his life were in danger, of course he wasn’t going to be making the best decision. “Right you are. I don’t know how you’d find them. It seems like they did a lot of fucked up shit.” He nodded, a frown still on his face. “I should have used my head and not my emotions.” He took her hand that was resting on his shoulder and pulled it to his lips, pressing a soft kiss there. “I’m sorry, Vanessa.”

Vanessa didn’t move away. She couldn’t when he was so clearly resting his head on her hand. What could he possibly be trying to do for me? What had to be done? That was bullshit. “Listen to me, Jet,” she said, her tone implying that it wasn’t a suggestion. “I’m not someone that can be destroyed easily. If you are acting this way to keep me safe, you’re just putting me in more danger. I’m nothing without my boys, without you. And removing yourself from me just makes me vulnerable. Do you understand?”

Jet looked her in the eyes and sighed. He didn’t want to break. After all he had thrown everything away for this. To avoid this exact thing. But here he was, being just as much in love with her as he knew he was deep down and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t say no to her. Not when he was like this. “I know. I know.” He lifted his head from her hands and ran a hand through his hair. “This was different though. They had both you and Otis, what was I supposed to do?” He couldn’t help it as his voice rose. He knew she was right on some level but he also knew that whoever called him could be watching them, even months later. “You were going to die and I couldn’t let that happen. I’d never let that happen. I-” He cut himself off, stopping before he said something he wanted to but knew he couldn’t.

And just like that she had lost the urge to hurt him. It was scary how fast the temptation left her, but hearing that he was miserable did not make Vanessa feel good. It just left her confused. Why would he make himself miserable…he had claimed he was going to be great without her. But he wasn’t, which she expected, but she hated. She wanted to be the cloud on his parade, not let him be there already. He was right in saying she had better things to do. She just also didn’t want them when he was right there in front of her. Looking so defenseless. 

Vanessa wasn’t sure if she should leave it at that or push the envelope for her own sanity. She found herself cupping his face with her hands, trying to understand what was going through his head and getting angry with herself when she didn’t. “What are you doing?” she asked him, even though she thinks she directed it towards herself more. “If you’re so miserable, why just…give up like that? This isn’t the Jet I know.”

If it was anyone else, any other time, he would have just pulled away from her. Put on his angry face and put on the whole ‘I don’t need you act’. But right now, right here? It was too much for him. He had had took many drinks in what felt like his month long, or maybe more he had stopped counting, drinking binge. Jet couldn’t help himself and before he knew what he was doing he was leaning into her touch with a sigh. He knew he should move, walk away from her. But he couldn’t. Not again, not anymore.

He laughed again, this time obviously upset. But he let that be the end of that. He wasn’t so drunk that he would let himself get more upset than he was. “I’m doing what has to be done. For you.” He shakes his head and frowns. “It’s the opposite, I’m not giving up. I’m working hard to do what I have to do. Even if it makes me miserable. It’s what I have to do.”

Just hearing him say her name egged Vanessa on. She turned around, looked him up and down and laughed, empty and as disgusted as she felt. She was drunk, but normally she was pretty good at keeping face. But right now? She wanted to get a little messy. Jet didn’t deserve her composure. No one really did. But she used to put a little more effort into him before he stabbed her in the back.

“You look like you pissed yourself. Really going to the gutter now that you are an independent entity, yeah?” She had lost all source of class at this point. She was over it.  “Are you mad? Good. You should be.” She took a step closer to him, the alcohol on her breath obvious as she kept going. “I have decided to make it my mission to make sure you’re never happy again. Why? Because you aren’t someone who’s life I want to improve anymore. You’re nothing to me.”

Jet clenched his jaw in an effort to keep what he really wanted to say in his mind. There were so many thoughts warring with each other in his mind. He wanted to tell her the truth, he wanted to push her away, and so many other things that instead of acting on any of them he stood frozen for a few moments as she spoke. It wasn’t until she took a step closer to him that he snapped out of his daze.

“You say that like you didn’t just pour it on me.” He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. That’s how she was going to deal with this? Jet had been certain that she would be fine without him. But them what was this? This wasn’t how things were supposed to go. “I’m mad that you’re acting like a complete lunatic. You have better things to do.” Her next words cut through him, even though he had said the same to her, she had taken it one step further. But he deserved it. He had convinced himself as much after all. So what did he do? He laughed, but not happily. His anger drained from him. “It won’t be too hard Nessa. I’m already unhappy. I hate my life and I don’t think you could make it worse. If it makes you feel better go ahead.” He let his arms uncross and drop to his side, his shoulders following as well.

Vanessa had been doing her best to avoid Jet. Even when all of the stuff that went down on Halloween, people being poisoned; she refused to see if he was on the list. She was better off without hi. Except she really wasn’t. Not having her right hand man was making her spiral a bit, and she was out drinking just about every night. Her temper was out of control, she couldn’t focus on her actual jobs at hand, and when she would finally black out at the end of the night, she found peace.

But now even drinking was hard. Because there he was. Her beautiful boy. Not even three feet away from her, drinking, looking like he wasn’t phased. It pissed her off quite frankly. So like any sane person, she decided to walk by him, spilling her drink in his lap as she passed. She was making her way towards the bathroom but she wasn’t sure if she was going in. She just wanted to ruin his night because he had ruined hers.

It was hard for Jet to concentrate on anything. Especially since work was a lot slower since everything with the Halloween party and what had happened with Doug. But even as things got to a more normal place he couldn’t seem to find his own footing again. He had been so sure, so together for years, why was this so hard? But his brain helpfully provided him with the answer. Vanessa. He had had Nessa. Somehow she made everything easier to deal with. But that was a burned bridge. There was no way for things to go back to how they were and it was all in the name of keeping her safe.

When a drink seemed to fall in his lap, he let out a curse and his eyes narrowed, ready to go after whoever was the culprit. That was until he saw her face for a few seconds. His heart thumped painfully against his chest, and with all the alcohol in his system, he couldn’t control the shock and surprise on his face. There was also a sadness there, one not hard to see if you were looking for it. Anger was still his surface emotion and he pushed past people, trying to get to her. Jet moved to grab her shoulder but thought better of it and just settled for saying, “What the fuck, Vanessa?”

By this point, Jet didn’t know which way to go. He had destroyed his relationship with Vanessa and Sin City had been closed for a bit after Doug had been shot. What did he have left? Nothing. Nothing at all. So he spent his time working out and running around the city and his nights hanging out in bars, drinking and partying and sometimes not remembering anything the next day. He had gotten lucky for a while, not running into Vanessa. But as he walked out of the gym, he spotted her, not far away. He didn’t think she saw him so he turned and moved to walk the other way.

“Well, this face paint took a little while to do, but I think it looks pretty cute.”

“Hey I think I recognize that face, even under the make-up. I knew you’d figure something out.”

“I’ve seen worse,” he said shortly, regarding the man’s empty glasses. Darien waved the bartender over, ordering himself a double shot of whiskey. “Most people who’re fine don’t try to convince someone who’s not even said anything that they’re fine. So if you ain’t actually fine then maybe you should talk about it.” He hadn’t been paying much attention to the gossip blogs, but his sister had. And he knew from her that a lot of people were really going through it right now.

Jet barked out a laugh at the stranger’s reaction. He wasn’t wrong but he still seemed to find it funny. He was only getting started with his drinking after all. If things went to his plan, he didn’t even want to remember tonight or the next night either. “I’m only getting started. I’ve been a lot worse but it’s been years. I’m hoping my tolerance has gone down a bit since then.” He grinned over at the other man. “Probably not. But the decision I made was my own. I did it to save the only person I care about. Though I know she’ll never talk to me again.” He shrugged and downed the rest of his drink, ordering another shot and a beer.

He knew that this was his decision. All of it was on his shoulders. But damn as the days went on, it just became a heavier and heavier weight to bear. Until even the distraction of work and company of others wasn’t enough. That was how Jet found himself sitting a different bar, six drinks and 4 shots in. He had sworn that he wouldn’t go back to drinking heavily but the only person to hold him to it was gone, so what did it matter? He heard someone sit next to him and he sighed. Better to head off the concerned party before they could say anything. “Look I know this seems like a lot but I’m fine. Really. Go about your day.”

“Thanksgiving is fun. I like the food and everything. And since I’m froom Canada but living here, I basically get to do it twice. Halloween is probably the more fun one though. You’re right about that. I’m sure I’ll come up with something.”

“I guess the food is a good thing. I’ve never been the biggest fan, but I think that’s because us Aussie’s don’t really do it. Plus our season’s are a lot different. I’ve heard Canada is pretty nice. You could literally be anything you wanted. People are pretty talented with make-up these days.”

“Alright, Canadian Thanksgiving is over which means I can officially catch up to everyone else holiday wise. I am at a complete loss as to what to do or be for Halloween. Any suggestions?”

“You know, even after being here for years, I still don’t really see the draw for Thanksgiving. But Halloween I’m definitely more into. I’d just go with something you like.”

He' didn't know. Thought it might be something illegal...didn't know it would be somethin' so...awful. Changed me, that night did. Changed me hard. Sickened m'self so much I almos' died there too. Sometimes...wish I had. Couldn' stop de ones I'd gathered, so  I helped whoever I could to get out. Managed ta snatch one little girl outta harm's way. Don't know who she was, bones stickin' every which way out of her face. But dat...dat was all I could do.
