“Hey it’s been a long day but I’m actually really looking forward to tonight.” She said reassuringly. “I would have never killed you for getting under my skin. I would have just hexed you to make you look like a troll.”
Although he’d technically only been teasing, James still grinned wider, “I’m glad. You’re probably not looking forward to it as much as I am though.”
“Thanks, James. That means a lot coming from you. How have you been?”
“Of course it does,” James replied, nudging him playfully, “I meant every word though,” At his question, he grinned, “I’ve got my date with Evans tonight.”
“All the more reason to sneak out of here while we can.” Marlene wasn’t in the mood to take much seriously, not that she ever was really, but she knew she ought to be more careful in the things she said. “Fine. We’ll do it together then, will give us the upper hand and prevent me from going in without a plan. Deal.”
“Not until you’re fully recovered,” James understood her need to joke around and not take this as seriously as he was. He would do the same in the a situation like this. In fact he had been the same and was even now, “Deal,” He repeated with a nod. That bastard was going to pay for what he’d done. With the two of them together, they were more likely to win, “So who was it?”
“Then let’s get this one out of the way and we’ll see.” She continued to tease, diverting her gaze to avoid blushing too much. “Oh believe me James, if you die it won’t because of me.”
“Get this one out of the way? If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you don’t want to go on this date with me,” He continued to tease but a part of him worried that what he said was true. James laughed, “That’s nice to hear. There’s a time where it would have been the opposite.”
“Oi Potter– no judging,” she teased.
“The only judgement I hold is to the fact that you’re lying to me.”
“Really? It looks a little different. Did you do something to your hair instead?”
“Nope. This is my look.”
“Well maybe I don’t want it to go well, maybe I think I don’t deserve any good that comes my way.”
“You deserve every piece of good and happiness that comes your way, Pete.”
“You never know, who’s to say the death eaters haven’t planned a grand attack on this very hospital wing within the next 24 hours?” Marlene continued to tease, it was in her nature to make light out of the worst of situations even if she knew very well that had she not been found, she would be dead. “You have yourself a deal, Potter.” Marlene smirked, extending her good arm to shake his hand. “Fancy, fancy. I have connections too, you know.”
“You’ll jinx it if you talk like that, McKinnon,” James replied, the sincerity in his voice growing. He chuckled as he shook her hand then grew serious again, “Let’s go after him together. You can’t do it on your own unless you want to land right back here again but I can’t stop you from going after him. I won’t stand by while these people hurt my friends and, as much as I hate to admit it, I can’t defeat one on my own yet. So we do it together.”
“Sure, only because you are not sure you will get another one.” Lily replied with a wink. “I would never.”
“I like my chances of a second date at the present moment,” James replied with his infamous charming grin, “Good. There wouldn’t be a second date for sure if I was dead.”
“ I am sure you are, but I really want him to be in full shape?”
“He’ll be fine, I swear. He’s in good hands.”
“And you being so full of yourself makes you one too, so maybe we are even”
“I’m not as full of myself as you seem to think.”
“I do have an interview coming up in a few days, don’t think it’ll go too well.”
“You can’t think like that, Wormtail. If you go in with a mindset like that, then it definitely won’t go well.”
“Maybe, but it’ll be worth it because I’ll be living rather than spending my final days as a cabbage,” Marlene sighed dramatically, rolling her eyes. “Make it two and you have yourself a deal.” She shook her head, forcing herself to sit upright. “You wouldn’t even know who to kill.”
“These aren’t your final days, Marlene. Don’t talk like that,” James knew she was intentionally being over-dramatic but the thought of losing someone else would kill him. He chuckled, “I’ll buy you ten if you don’t fuck up the treatment by drinking in here,” James rolled his eyes, “I have connections in the Auror Headquarters. I could find him.”
Heath made his way over to spot James, readjusting his position in case of failure on James’ part. “How have you been?”
Whenever Heath was in position, James started lifting the weights, “I’ve been good,” He said, “What about you? How’s that wound healing up?”
I like to think I’m good at everything I do, including working out.”
“Well that makes you sound like a douche if I’m being honest.”
Lily’s cheeks went a darker shade of pink when he smiled at her and nodded. “Yeah, unless you change your mind and decide to go out with Sirius instead.”
“Instead of going on a date with you? Never,” James glanced around, looking nervous but an amused smile ghosted his lips, “Don’t tell him I said that.”
“I kind of figured that out considering we are at the Headquarters.” He scoffed. “I’m an Auror too, you can tell me. Is this the muggle machine I ordered for my case?”
“I’m only an Auror-In-Training. I’m just doing some odd jobs for Heath,” James shrugged, “It might be but I wouldn’t open it in case it isn’t.”
