Its distinct style (e.g. big eyes to emphasise emotion, exciting #robot battles, and gravity-defying hairdo) single-handedly codified the tropes and looks we associate with the term ‘anime’ today, not to mention solidifying the usual 25-minutes-per-episode format of #anime series. However, animating half-hour episodes for television, however, remains a costly endeavour, and thus #Tezuka developed a process he termed ‘limited animation’, which involved corner-cutting methods such as reducing the number of frames per second of film, reusing cels, utilizing a lot of still frames, and even recycling his #manga panels as storyboards. Tetsuwan Atom would go down in history as the first modern anime on TV, and its massive popularity ensuring its export to international markets where it also found great success under its new English name of #astroboy. In 1961 Tezuka left @Tōei to found his own animation company, Mushi Production. Taking cues from his experience with Boku no Son #goku, #Tezuka began to work on adapting another one of his #manga. The manga he chose was an extremely popular one about a certain heroic #robot boy who fights criminals, aliens, and evil robots. It was called Tetsuwan Atom (Eng: The Mighty Atom) and it debuted on #Japanese televisions on New Year’s Day of 1963. Although hardly anyone would include the artworks of Hiroshi Yoshida or Kawase Hasui in their history of #anime, I can't help but see the detailed renditions and tones used in these #landscape prints as some sort of precursor to the backgrounds and surroundings we see in anime. Title: Educational Punch Pictures Publisher: Kobayashi Shinkichi Date: 1898 A nice print we have here from Educational Punch Pictures! Japan Punch was actually started by an English cartoonist Charles Wirgman. They were printed using woodblocks and amounted to about 10 pages each. The magazine is recognised as an early form of #manga, bringing #comic book conventions such as speech bubbles and sound effects to #japan for the first time! Much like Tezuka's inspiration from Disney and American cartoons, Wirgman combined Japanese and European elements to create his own style, making his contribution to the manga and #anime legacy all the way back from the 19th century! We've recently acquired this interesting giga hand painted scroll to our collection! Giga (戯画) literally means playful or jocular pictures and became ever more prevalent towards the end of the 19th century. The Meiji government was a lot laxer than the preceding Tokugawa regime so people could test the social commentary waters a bit more than before. This genre was a free zone, experimental, humorous and unrestricted by boundaries, much like #anime. The #art form was meant to entertain, foreshadowing the caricature and #surreal elements we may take for granted in our favourite series today!
