REI’s 5th Flagship Store in Washington, D.C.
As REI Sr. Project Manager, I lead the design and delivery of an award-winning reclaim-reuse flagship store project for the historic Uline arena in Washington, D.C.

2017 Shop Design Award Winner
CHANEL
2007 was a busy year for shop-in-shops. Remodel and New Store projects integrated several designer names at multiple Nordstrom stores. Shown here are the CHANEL Handbags and Ladies Ready to Wear shops in the Downtown Seattle flagship store. Just like a CHANEL handbag, these shops are jewel boxes of perfection. With exacting details and tight tolerances, it is a major feat to build out these shops. Designer, architect, contractor, and millworker are all faced with daily challenges. As time consuming as these spaces are, once complete, they really shine. It was my pleasure to lead our project team to meet and exceed the expectations of the CHANEL brand.

The List
Big names for my little black book. As Vendor Shop Coordinator for Nordstrom Store Planning, I’m privileged to work with the world’s best luxury brands. Their merchants, store design, visual merchandising, and support teams represent the best in the business. I cherish these partnerships.
It’s always exciting when a new brand comes to the table, likewise when a brand rolls out a new concept. I’m a firm believer that each and every shop has a story to tell and am proud to be a part of that narrative. Safe to say, a shop-in-shop build-out is always a page turner, with plenty of plot twists.
Prada
A first for Nordstrom and a shinning example of the elegance that is Prada. Shown here are the Prada Accessories and Ladies Ready To Wear boutiques in Bellevue, WA. Proud to have lead the charge in this first time partnership with such a world class brand.

Nordstrom Store Planning Intranet Site
Communication can make or break a business. In 2010, I lead the design and launch of the latest NSP intranet site. Prior to the site’s launch, critical information was scattered about our internal network. Frequently requested documents were sent out via e-mail with little-to-no versioning control. This was problematic for both active project documentation and archive data.
This new online central repository has been a huge success. Upkeep and expansion of the site remains one of my primary responsibilities, and we’ve recently expanded the site to include the Nordstrom Rack division.

The landing/news page allows the Store Planning team to share the outcomes of their latest projects. At the launch of fresh campaigns, I publish a brief project synopsis and 12-photo slide show. This brings positive visibility to the department and encourages engagement between company partners.
The Stores page is the NSP’s centralized point to access all archive data. Users can search by store number for blank floor plans, financial plans, by-store or by-department interior photos, and complete project details. Additionally, analytics published in partnership with our finance group are also available. Internal publishing of these data sets, and encouraging comments from those working in the field, has built a robust project archive. In turn, having an easily accessible record of real and verifiable store-by-store facts is integral for the future planning of new stores, remodels, and design concepts.
Burberry Cosmetics
In 2010, Nordstrom was the exclusive launch partner of Burberry Beauty in the United States. Shown here are two of six soft shops we rolled out with the licensee of the Burberry brand Inter Parfums.
These projects were a particular challenge given the multiple stakeholders throughout design development and the newness of not only the shop design, but also the merchandise itself.
I took charge of keeping all coordination on track to meet the accelerated launch schedule. The end result was a resounding success that supported a new category of merchandise while still speaking to the heritage of Burberry.

Process
Customer expectations are always in flux. Retail store design groups must be nimble and adapt quickly. Systems of yesterday don’t always facilitate the goals of today. Moreover, creativity can be stifled without an effective process.
In 2009, I lead the charge in a 6-month project to clean house, eliminate duplication of efforts, and increase workflow efficiencies in the Nordstrom Store Planning department.
Shown here is sample documentation detailing the integration of legacy systems. I created an entirely new naming convention for all interior elements. This revamp brought the library of fixture drawings, CAD cells, and purchasing catalog into alignment. The effort was a resounding success, saving time and money with less drafting time, increased clarity on renditioning, swifter take-offs, and expedition of ordering.
Soft Shops
Shown here are examples of Jimmy Choo and Marc Jacobs accessories “soft shops.” Although much simpler in scope than fully customized “hard shops,” these smaller spaces present their own challenges.
There is a delicate balance between providing ample customization for the brand, yet still integrating neutrality to delineate between the brands. Negotiating compromises in each brand’s design to align to our standards is a rewarding process. See the brand list for other partners for whom I have also coordinated soft shop in shops.
Customer Service All-Star
The customer matters. In turn, people matter. Nordstrom leadership recognizes those who meet and exceed customers expectations with the Customer Service All-Star Award. I’m proud to say I am among the ranks of those bestowed this great recognition. As a store-level visual merchandiser, I quickly learned the ropes of both the business and the creative strategies that support it. I excelled in styling, display window curation, and in store event planning. My enthusiasm, effective communication, and attention to detail were all cited in my recognition.
BP. Photo Booth / In-Store Technology Integration
The boundary between our physical and virtual world is becoming increasingly blurred. All brick and mortar retailers are adopting an increasing amount of in-store technology to keep pace with the demands of consumer expectations.
The BP. Photo Booth enabled girls shopping in Nordstrom’s juniors department to take photos of themselves trying out new outfits and then share them with friends via email right from the dressing room. This video clip illustrates this social and interactive proof of concept.
As the Store Planning lead, I advised marketing, technology, and consulting teams (Zeus Jones & VaryWell) on the circulation of the experience, design of custom fixtures, and execution of the related construction coordination.
In addition to this project, I’ve also advised several other similar experiences. Currently, I am the Store Planning lead for Nordstrom’s integration of mobile POS (point of sale) systems.
Ballet
For those of you unfamiliar with the theater, shown here is a “ghost light”. This is the light which occupies down stage center while the venue is not in use. This night light is primarily for safety, but has many supernatural tales surrounding it’s use. Suffice to say, my days as a dancer seem like a past life. It’s been quite sometime since this ghost of my past has graced the stage. Even still my time with classical dance was perhaps one of the most challenging of my all my pursuits. Part art and part athletics, Ballet is a fine arts foundation like none other. The pursuit of perfection is honed in daily training, choreography rehearsed in repetition, and then executed collaboratively or independently in performance. This discipline, passion, and dedication are qualities I carry forward into my work of today.
Black Chandelier
Freelance window display design circa 2006. Sad to say, the retail stores of Black Chandelier are no longer around. This specific space was a very whimsical environment that spoke to the brand’s imaginative and fantastical attitude. Lead clothing designer Jared Gould had quite the buzz stirring around this venture.
With Black Chandelier’s fresh start in their new store and their playful adaptations of timeless clothing designs, Cuckoo clocks was the inspiration for this installation. We bent time with these colorful plexiglass Cuckoo’d-out clocks. It was the perfect material selection for the shallow storefront of this boutique because the props did not impede on the sight lines of the vibrant and energetic store interior, or the merchandise on display.
All clock designs were original concepts, with production and installation executed by myself and my partner Chris Larson. Mannequin styling by Black Chandelier sales staff.
Eagle Scout
Nerd Alert! Anyone who tells you he “got” his Eagle Scout or “was” an Eagle Scout is not an Eagle Scout. I might not wear those fashionable knee-high socks anymore, but I am most certainly proud of my Scouting heritage. And, I am an Eagle Scout. Beyond valuable leadership skills, Scouting has instilled a love for outdoor recreation and stewardship. Check out my blog for details on my backpacking adventures among other personal interests.
