Dangerous Night | Jiaying and Gage
gage-of-athoria:
âI am a vampire, did you expect anything less?â Gage shot her a playful wink. Such banter made her increasingly comfortable with the human. It made her miss that vulnerability. She was still very vulnerable but in other ways. Jiaying ignited that longing to maintain some measure of humanity within herself.Â
âWhy not ask the real question, Will I be in the room watching you sleep lusting after a vein?â A laugh was as good an answer as any. Gage had no plans to harm the woman. She was worth far more alive. She was someone Gage would have gravitated toward as a human. Her human years loomed in the forefront of her mind, yes, Jiaying could have been there. Perhaps if Gage would have found her then she would have turned out differently.Â
âI will give you privacy if you want it. Honestly though, I would like to have someone to talk to in private. I know itâs difficult to believe but I have no friends. Itâs lonely as I said. Donât worry, I am not going to hurt you. â It was no exaggeration. The silence would drive a mortal mad. It gave gage time to reflect on the past and reflect on the doom to come.Â
âEven as a human I was pretty much friendless. Father wanted a daughter he could marry to the highest bidder. HE wanted a means to a social raise. I refused him and he unleashed his own personal hell on me. Mother believed every slither of his lies. I became a monster to them both. Unnatural and rebellious. I wasnât interested in anyone my father would try playing match maker with.â Gage found the words coming to life as vivid as the memories floating in her subconscious.Â
âI used to have long beautiful hair. Many men found me attractive, a tool my father exploited.â Gage grinned, â I cut it all off the very same night I found myself on the business end of my makers fangs. I was finally going to run away from the death grip my father had on me. I was going to be free to be who I wanted to be. I spent so many years watching them burn the magic users praying someone would fight. I wanted that hope that maybe I could get away too. Truth was I was just scared. I wanted a sign that I would make it. No one ever escaped that flame until they did. They were different too and one of them made it out. My way out had to come out of death instead of life.â
Gage hadnât meant to dive into the darkest corners of her past. It sort of just happened in the moment. She would usually manipulate the words and conceal the most secretive parts for herself but Jiaying was hearing it raw and uncut.Â
âI died trying to be the hero. The girl was already dead and Then I was dying. I didnât think of leaving my parents. I didnât expect them to cry over my body. I knew I was dying and the only thing I could feel was relief. No more hiding, no more abuse. It was all going to end and I was welcoming it with open arms. When I woke up I was angry, still am. My throat burned for blood. It was like swallowing fire. I fed. I killed and it was easy because I told myself that I was making them free. It was miserable because my maker was no better than my father. I feel like a child still learning to walk half the time.â
She shrugged and sat down on the bed. It was a cozy little room but there was an icy chill to her words. âYour blood would be delicious. I could sink my teeth in and never let you go. I have wanted to. I have seen it play out a thousand times but that would mean taking you out of this world. I know I could not taste without ending your life. I donât have the control for it. And from where I am sitting, the world is a lot better in my point of view when you are alive and well because there a slight chance I might actually have a friend in someone.âÂ
At first she did not say anything at all. It was a lot to digest, and the story was not a light-hearted one. She couldnât simply brush it off with laughter or tell a joke to ease the mood. She would not feel sorry for her, not say that she did anyway, as Gage has specifically told her not to the first time they met. Thus she committed to silence instead, eyes following her as she sat down on the bed.
Throughout the time they had known one another, honesty had not been lacking. She had been careful of putting any trust into it all, considering the truths she had received sort of⊠accidental. The rumour about Gageâs parents had come from one of her informants, and last time they met Gage had just escaped a witch in Leeds. She could hardly be held accountable for anything she said that evening. This time, however, it was genuine, and there was no question about it. Nobody would possibly tell of their blood thirst in such a manner had the intent not been a true one. She pressed her lips together to a smile at the last of Gageâs words; wasnât all of this what a friendship was?
 âYou do.â
She made her way to Gageâs bed as well, sitting down beside her. She put a hand on her arm, looking at her with determination in her eyes, wanting to emphasise her own genuinity about the matter.Â
âYouâve earned my respect, Gage.â Though she greatly appreciated it, honesty was not one of Jiayingâs strongest suits; she could easily slither from the truths, put on a mask to hide any sign of it. It was reserved only for a selected few, though she supposed Gage had grown to make the cut. She wanted to tell her more, but she found it difficult to find the right words for it. Instead she leaned her back against the wall, smile playing on her lips.Â
âIâm sorry for doubting your intentions for bringing me down here.â
