Up All Night

Why Shawngela and Angela Moore are Important

To me at least.

I myself am a black woman. I’m 19. I grew up watching Boy Meets World reruns on The Family Channel. 

I also grew up looking up to Angela Moore. Why wouldn’t I? She was (still is) gorgeous and spoke intelligently and was kind and funny and she looked like me. I know that it has been said a million times, but representation is so freaking important. At that point in my life,  I had never been exposed to a black female character on a show who wasn’t a stereotype or exaggerated or used as some type of comedic device (i.e. That’s so Raven… I love me some Rae Baxter but honestly that show was a bit much at times).

Angela was important to me because she was somewhat who I aspired to be. She liked journalism and fashion and was incredibly insightful and smart. She was not a stereotype of a black woman but a black woman who defied stereotypes. She was amazing to me and truly unique. I had never seen anything like Angela at that age.
