Just prior to moving to Manila, I was awarded a grant by the Greater Columbus Arts Council to be a visiting artist in Dresden Germany. By my lose definition, an art residency is the space of an experience. The frightening thing about residency programs is that they are based on a wrong belief that the artist is some kind of elevated being; and that after spending some time in a space, the artist absorbs the space and can deliver an object.
My time is Dresden benefited from what the social sustainability of networking and face-to-face communication can offer. A studio in Neustadt and an invitation by some new friends, Harald and Lucie, to exhibit at their gallery Alte Feuerwacher Loschwitz marked the start of last Autumn and the end of my stay. In between, I traveled around Western Europe with my husband (the pic above is from our visit to the Architecture Biennale in Venice) and also spent time with new friends I met along the way.
A few summers ago, I had the chance to spend some time in the Catskills, in upstate New York, for a residency at Mildred’s Lane, home to J. Morgan Puett and artist Mark Dion.
‘’The Attention Lab is part guerrilla seminar and part meditative and kinetic practicum. A discipline of the senses is pursued. Beginning with available traditions and protocols of the Order, the group’s aim will be to develop and test new experimental practices of attention.’’

During my residency at the Banff Centre in 2015, the artist team Heather and Ivan Morison along with residents, artists, architects, and designers, hosted and collaborated on a dinner party. Titled ‘Impossible Rainbow’, the performance was both a celebration and also a sculpture in and of itself. Our role there as artist residents was to both perform and partake in the feast--a multi course meal, each entree created from a color of the rainbow.
Perhaps I miss the winter weather of Canada. Or maybe it’s the fact that my studio here in Manila is still in the works. Here is another pic from the Banff Centre...

Dresden Exhibition
