Here’s the latest entry in my Sketch Wallet. The face looks familiar but I can’t quite peg who it is. At first I was thinking that it might be the boxer/MMA fighter, Eric Esch, aka “Butterbean,” but it’s not. I believe it’s an actor. If you know then please leave a comment. The boys had their first day of school yesterday. Jake is now in fifth grade and Aidan is in third. It wasn’t that longer ago when Jake was starting second and Aidan had just begun Kindergarten…how time flies. #oakmeadowelementary

My friend, Wayne, commissioned me to render him as Dr. Strange, or, “Dr. Strwaynge,” as I’ve come to call him. I went with the classic, comic book version. As I started doing the work I became a bit intimidated because Wayne has been a model on several occasions for World Fantasy Award and Hugo Award winning illustrator, John Picacio ( @johnpicacio ). So, I wasn’t sure how high Wayne’s expectations were since he was used to such exquisite quality. I repurposed an old Sketch Wallet page that I was unhappy with. My reference for this was a very small image so I couldn’t make out any fine details. This forced me to just focus on shapes and stay loose. I enjoy going old art because I can never totally remove all the previous marks. I never know what to get my dad for Father’s Day. Whatever he needs and/or wants he buys for himself. I’ve been telling myself for some time that I should give more art as gifts. It’s always good for me to produce more and, hopefully, it provides the recipient with something unique that they’ll treasure. This is the last one of the series and it is a re-do. When I was applying the spray mount it clumped up and stained the paper so I reworked it to cover up the stained area. I also added some color. The most obvious is the red of the glove but the skin is also toned. It’s hard to notice because it is close to the paper color. My wife had some leftover coffee that I used as a makeshift watercolor.
