it must have sucked for helena to be told to her face that the reason she wasn't able to fool Irving was because she was cruel. helena who knows she is cruel, who's able to admit to mark s that she didn't like who she was on the outside, who is stealing her innie's place just to feel a crumb of the affection and kindness she is denied outside of the severed floor. to be told that her cruelty is impossible to miss, that it is obvious to anyone who is paying attention. she wasn't trying to be kind- she was trying to be helly r, and fundamentally misunderstood that helly r and helena are different because helly r isn't cruel.

helena gets the abrasiveness right, the intensity, the flirting, the anger. but she doesn't get that helly r is able to have all that without pointing it like a weapon at someone else. helena knows how to be nice, but not kind. and she was loved for a brief moment, and she knows it's only because she was able to pretend to be someone else, and she wasn't even good at it.
