Would you ever make a tutorial for the faux porcelain animals?

here goess! the decoration process of this dragon:

started with this napkin. local grocery stores have been stocking new william morris designs for a couple of years now, and they continue to be a goldmine of patterns.

this method only works on a white/light background because the paper is very thin and not super pigmented. i have used a similar technique with thin satin fabric when i've wanted to put patterns on dark backgrounds. this spider has a satin-ed butt:

separate the top layer. a cool thing is that if you need symmetrical patterns, you can use either side of the paper -> just flip it over for symmetry.

i prefer cutting things out with small scissors. if the background of the napkin is white, you can get away with rougher cuts, but a dark background is a bit of a pain in that you need exact precision. i cut loosely at first so i can try the designs on the body.

to place a design, put down a layer of decoupage varnish -> align the piece and press in place -> smooth into the surface with a brush and add a top coat of varnish. use thin layers and work quickly so the paper doesn't get soaked to the point where it's easy to fuck up with the brush.

you can also do this with just white glue or something like mod podge.

if you need to remove something after it has dried, the humble toothpick has got you. wet it a little & rub away the paper/varnish.

here's the dragon after applying most of the paper pieces. i did end up adding some flowers while detail painting.

finally, unify & clarify & embellish the napkin designs by painting over and around them by hand. let dry, and apply several layers of gloss varnish for the porcelain effect. i use thick layers, just thin enough to not start dripping, and apply 3-5 depending on when the vibe is correct.

all of this is way would be way easier to do on unassembled doll pieces, but i need to see the whole thing at all times to make any design decisions.

Hi! If it's not a secret: how do you make the masks? I wanted to make a mask mysref, but I feel a little lost as I'm not sure where to get the resources about this type of craft. Thought I'd give this askbox a try T_T

not a secret, but also not super accessible. i sculpted the masks in blender & 3d printed them.

before i had a 3d printer, i've made some paper masks with the following process:

have something shaped like a human head as your base. i had a plaster cast of my own face that i used, but it doesn't have to be that detailed/specific.

sculpt your mask on top of the face. i used non-drying reusable modeling clay.

after you're done, mix up some wallpaper paste, water, and wood glue. soak some sheets of paper [could be construction paper or newspaper or whatever, depending on the amount of fine detail the sculpt has] in the mixture, and apply to your sculpt, pressing tightly into the contours. get in there with fingers/sculpting tools to kind of massage the paper into the clay sculpt. use larger sheets in flat areas and smaller bits of paper in areas with detailed geometry to avoid creasing. about four layers should do, though this would depend on the paper.

let dry & peel off the clay.

coat with wood filler & sand smooth.

maybe some primer or gesso and some more sanding if you feel like it.

paint & varnish & decorate.

there are a thousand variations of this technique & many very similar ones, but i've found this process to work the best and made some masks with it you absolutely could not tell were paper.

I’m currently on temporary unemployment benefits due to my job being closed for the summer so despite having a job waiting for me I still had to go see a lady about job prospects and my plans for the future.

She looked at my files and said “So…what are your plans?”

“My plans?” I asked.

“Yes. You’re a dishwasher. You don’t want to do that forever, do you?”

“Maybe not, but I’m happy with it right now. It pays surprisingly well, I never have to work weekends or overtime, and it’s the sort of job I don’t have to bring with me home mentally. It frees up a lot of time to do the things I like”

“Like what?”

“Hobbies, my family, friends, my pets. I don’t want to hate my job but I don’t want it to be my whole life either, eating away at the things that give my life meaning”

She looked at me for a few seconds then said “You know…the older I get I understand that mindset more and more”

And then she went into a very long, very personal rant about how she has started feeling like she wasted her life on high demand jobs and how taxing and mentally draining her current job is because she has to make huge decisions that can ruin people’s lives and how do you not take that home with you? She loved drawing too but she hadn’t picked up a pen in years and-

So the conversation went from “Your life must be a bit shit with a job like that” to “Oh my god my job is shit and I’ve wasted my life on it!”

I felt like I was the inciting incident in one of those lifetime movies about a woman quitting her job and moving back to her home town to make up for lost time. I hope she’s doing well.

some time ago i thrifted a decorative pillowcase specifically because it had cranes with pretty wings on it. the other day while going through my patterned fabrics i came across one that had these big flowers with a matching style -> paired the two fabrics to make this kind of drawn-looking cute little outfit. and because i don't like patterning, any time i make a cute little outfit i need to make an entire doll to sew & glue it on.
