there is something interesting and revealing about how alicent as a character conceptualizes gender + it's relationship to power or lack thereof in how about she puts all of this frantic desperate energy into saving helaena from the same fate of being a queen locked away in the castle spitting out endless targaryen heirs while helaena resists and clearly conceives of her own situation differently and clings to her children rather than political power and freedom. and then there's auburn-haired identical to his mommy daeron across the continent literally begging his uncle to save him not from a life of squeezing out targaryen heirs but of being propped up as a king who then tells him that as a little prince, he'll be just fine. the victimhood that alicent projects onto helaena is denied to daeron when he begs to be understood as one. (obviously helaena is very much a victim of many things, but she does not seem to understand herself as such nor does she desire to flee at this point). i see a lot of people frustrated with the way hotd makes all of its women characters into victims in some capacity and... well i think thats the point. how well they've conveyed this as a symptom of westerosi gender hierarchy versus a bias of their own leaking through is up for debate (i myself was getting a bit worried in s2 that we were getting quite close to the message that women are ontologically good because they are women) but i think daeron has solidified it so nicely. westeros cannot conceive of women as anything other than victims and men as anything other than perpetrators because of their respective relationships to political power. it is on this very basis that gwayne refuses to save daeron. even a sixteen year old boy is incapable of being understood as a victim of abuse by a man in his family that knows his abuser personally and calls him such. alicent and daeron are experiencing the same thing, abuse, but no one is able to understand it as such because they do not share the same gender-assigned access to political power. gender in westeros is a prison that exploits you no matter who you are. the bars might look different depending but you are locked inside all the same.
