On this day, President John Adam Married his first Cousin
On February 25, 1828, John Adams, son of President John Quincy Adams, married his first cousin, unwittingly following the tradition of keeping marriages within the family.
John Adams' grandfather, President John Adams, had married his third cousin, Abigail Smith. The marriage skipped generations with John Quincy Adams marrying an unrelated person. But, at age 25, John Quincy's second son, John, married his first cousin, Mary Catherine Hellen, 22, in a private ceremony at the White House.
