Axon
The axon, an electrically conducting nerve fibre, forms just one strand of a single system ‘arm’, which (when triggered) will reach out to any torn ecology in the hyper-system. Its primary use is for the creation of new lagoons via calcite coral membranes. These act as a cultivating nodes, kick-starting the local ecosystems.
Porite
A particular type of massive calcite coral species, has been mined in varying amounts over the Maldives’ recent (approx. 800 year) history.
Compressing Ecozones: Maldives
With rising sea levels and the greater energy costs to sustain paradise, perhaps one outcome is the reduction in overall size of the Earth’s ecozones, whilst retaining their biodiversity, complexity and ability to withstand localised disasters. Instead of only large atolls functioning as different ecosystems, perhaps singular lagoons become hetero-topic in terms of the systems they contain. The system can then be said to be a meta-ecosystem of localised niche areas and roles.

3.) Mapping the Meta-ecotopia
Thesis: Atlas of 101 Ecotopias
Tutors: Mike Aling (supervisor), Mark Garcia
[Awarded Distinction]
Thesis research mapped 101 ecotopias into a pocket-sized atlas. Assorted into different epochs, each was evaluated, with the aim of establishing an evolution of ecotopia alongside changing ecological understandings, and speculating where this leads in the posthuman. From quaint islands to extensive world building and systems, a spectrum of fiction, plays, poems, art, film and television was visited. Presented were the findings of one year’s transworld navigation to hypothetical ecological utopias.
