Medusa is a daughter of Phorcys and Ceto, youngest sister of Stheno and Euryale among three Gorgon sisters. Unlike her two older sisters, she chose a life of mortal due to being born beautiful and became the temple priestess of Athena, located in Athens. Not only as the most trusted priestess, but Medusa was also Athena’s lover, taking care of the goddess’ weapons and armors with utmost care and combing her hair. However, unfortunately, Medusa also caught the eye of Poseidon the god of sea, who found her attractive due to her beautiful hair resembling Demeter’s. Also, because Medusa was the priestess of his niece “who wronged him” and “took his city away”, Poseidon came for her.
When Poseidon made advances, Medusa ran to Athena’s temple to hide. But, he was able to find her before he forced himself on her cruelly to satiate his unrequited desire and petty revenge on Athena. But when she let out an anguished cry, Athena returned from the battlefield and chased him away, realizing what her uncle had done to her lover. Worried that Poseidon will come for her again, Athena made a difficult decision by turning her into a gorgon with viper hairs instead of non-venomous ones so her gaze on future offenders would have a permanent petrification effect on her will. Tearfully, Medusa left the temple and wandered to Isle of Sarpedon where her older sisters live. Her sisters Stheno and Euryale let her stay in their island and trained her on controlling Gorgon powers. During this time, Medusa realized she was pregnant with Poseidon’s children, and decided to defend herself and unborn children from men who attempted to behead her for glory. Eventually, she gave birth to Pegasus and Chrysaor.
At one point, she was calming her babies in her cove then sensed the presence. Medusa peeked and encountered Perseus who was armed, came for her head. But, when the hero spotted Perseus and Chrysaor being held protectively in her arms, his heart softened, as Medusa reminded him so much of his mother Danae. Much to his surprise, she didn’t petrify him at one glance but curiously approached him. Seeing a familiar shield he was holding, Medusa believed Athena asked him to look out for her and when hearing the stomach growling from Perseus, Medusa kindly dragged him in and offered a porridge for him to eat, patiently watching until he told her what happened; he was requested by king Polydectes to bring him the head of gorgon, and Perseus need it to save his mother Danae who was held hostage by the lustful king. As her sisters felt angry for Perseus and his mother, Medusa spotted the sack he brought and offered herself to be inside the sack. After planning, Medusa gets inside the sack as Pegasus flies with them. Perseus then spotted Princess Andromeda who was chained by the rocks of the island as a sacrifice of Cetus, the sea serpent belonging to Poseidon. Pegasus had the princess cover her eyes as he unraveled Medusa to Cetus who was petrified on spot before sinking. She hid inside the sack once more as Perseus returned the princess back to her kingdom Ethiopia where the king and queen happily arranged the marriage between the hero and their daughter. However, when Andromeda’s spineless ex-fiance objected by bringing his soldiers to take her by force, Medusa angrily showed up and petrified Phineus and his soldiers. Unfortunately, Andromeda’s parents were petrified accidentally until Medusa apologetically reverted them back to normal. After receiving food supplies from the king and queen, Perseus, Andromeda and Medusa left once more with Pegasus to Sephirus. When the tyrant Polydectes asked for the head of Medusa, Perseus placed the sack closer to him and when the king unraveled it, Medusa formed the most horrifying glare with glowing eyes and sharp fangs with her hair of vipers hissing angrily at him, causing the tyrant and his followers to turn into stone immediately, freeing Perseus’ mother and the people from his tyranny for good. When Perseus properly introduced Medusa to people of Sephirus, Danae was first to approach her. Instead of the monstrous beast she have heard, all the mother saw was a gentle and protective mother alike before giving the Gorgon a warm embrace, causing Medusa to cry as people cheered Perseus as their hero, Dictes (Polydectes’ kinder brother and foster family member of Perseus) as their new king, and Medusa as their guardian goddess.
She later reunited with Athena who was reluctant to approach her out of guilt. But when Medusa smiled in forgiveness and wiped her shield clean (like she used to do in her younger life) before giving back to her, Athena decided to make her immortal like her older sisters as she would continue becoming the goddess protecting Sephirus. Her temple is a sanctuary for women wronged by abusive environments or rapists. Pegasus became Perseus’ companion (and later, Heracles) as Chrysaor attended the Prometheus Hero Academia at the same timeline with Orion.
In the episode “Heracles and the Gorgon”, Medusa spotted Heracles and Triton led to the shore close to her temple and decided to scoop them out. While they were initially afraid of her appearance, they were quick to befriend her realizing she was Pegasus’ mother. Growing curious about life outside Sephirus island, she wondered about the life of a normal human once again. Danae, now an old woman and priestess of the temple, assured she can take a break from her duty as a goddess for just several days as she gets to see how her sons were doing. Not wanting to scare people, Medusa wrapped her head with the soft fabric. Medusa was introduced as Chrysaor’s mother as the tall man currently married the beautiful woman named Callirhoe and had a son named Geryon, the young man with multiple pairs of arms, who is Heracles’ strong rival. When Poseidon’s entitled demigod sons were bullying Alcippe, Tempest, and others, Medusa unraveled her headdress and turned them into stones, causing Poseidon to finally show up but shocked to see her again. Finally having a chance to get revenge, she proceeded to throw him over her shoulder, grabbing him by his hair and brutally slapping him over and over, pointing his trident close to his crotch and petrified most of his body except his head and his crotch, threatening to castrate him and his sons if they terrorize the innocents one more time. For the first time, Poseidon felt terrified as he took his petrified demigod children away. Among the onlookers were Phobos and Deimos, and the latter felt attracted to her, finding her brutally protective nature irresistible. In the epilogue, Poseidon’s demigod offspring were back to normal after 3 hours as it was now Amphitrite’s turn to terrorize them and her husband.
It is to be said that Medusa was constantly courted by Deimos, flattered and blushing by his gentlemanly behavior and went on dates with him. Eventually, Deimos made a rather gothic yet romantic marriage proposal; “Let the ocean dry, the earth rot and the sun shamed by dark…I’ll bring dread and loss to whoever harms you, let me admire your eyes for the rest of our painfully long lives.” In which, Medusa accepted the marriage, happily wed to the god of terror and gave birth to three Gorgon children.
