Consider, if you will, how weird 1984-85 were for Daniel LaRusso.

Like, you’re a sparky little bean from Jersey and you move across country with your mom, and suddenly you land in an Epic Rivalry, including violent bullying, which escalates quickly into a Homoerotic Karate War. Which you win, at great personal cost, and along the way you gain a Wise Mentor ™️.

You follow your Wise Mentor ™️ to Okinawa (as one does) and you’ve barely touched down on the tarmac before you’re embroiled in aforementioned Mentor’s Lifelong One-Sided Romantic/Karate Feud, which ends in A Fight To The Death on a sacred island. You win that one too, which is a relief.

You fly back home and they are tearing down your whole-ass apartment building, and your mom just told an elderly neighbor to tell you the news and buggered off across country to take care of a consumptive relative or whatever. Ill-advisedly, you singlehandedly decide to set up a bonsai store for your now unemployed Wise Mentor ™️ with all of your college tuition. Then a Karate-Older-Brother-Figure/Sex-God shows up and sort of insinuates that he’d like to mentor and/or eat you. Then some Thugs ™️ come and threaten you with Violence and drowning in a ravine if you don’t... enter Another Karate War? And your Wise Mentor ™️ won’t help, so you get a Sexy Cocaine Mentor (aforementioned Karate-Older-Brother-Figure/Sex-God), but he turns out to be the Bad Guy and in an Epic Romance with the Bad Guy from the previous Homoerotic Karate War, who you thought was dead but isn’t. So you suffer a lot and eventually win Another Karate War with the power of kata.

And then what? Does your life suddenly revert to completely normal? And there’s no explanation for why the past 2 years of your daily existence were fraught with m/m sexual tension and random karate violence, or why it suddenly and inexplicably stopped. In between TKK3 and Cobra Kai, there’s no mention of any bananas antics.

What I’m saying is, we all give Daniel LaRusso grief for being a petty bourgeois cog in the capitalist machine, and like having sold out all his dreams, but after 2 batshit formative years like that, I might also be determined to be as vanilla and mainstream as humanly possible. The terrible suits are a camouflage.
