I am not just a nurse. I poured out all my blood and sweat to earn the degree and the last two letters right after my name “RN”..
Being a nurse is like forgetting you have a life of your own. Because you have to prioritise the needs of the patients. And genuinely provide a holistic care, respect, and keep them dignified to whatever stage of illness they may be. Forgetting about holiday, missing family affairs, birthday and other special occasions.
Being a nurse is assumed to be having a bulletproof body against all the diseases. Yes, because we have to deal with communicable and hazards in order to heal one. Naming the few: urine, feces, blood, saliva, pus and all body fluids will no longer matter.
Thanks to PPE tools though.
Being a nurse means staying awake, either from 8-hour shift, 12 hours shift and worst 16 hours shift. Especially when the facility is out of staff and someone just rings sick. Yes, we have to keep our energy alive to provide a right on time medication, feeding, dressing, suctioning, intravenous fluid follow-ups and all some sorts of nursing care. Not to mention, bladder break isn’t available for us too. And hey did I forget about receiving complaints?Utility/elderly work, cleaners job, delayed meal serving, awful foods, untidy room cupboards, delayed doctors rounds, unprocessed or slow billing personnel and a lot more.
Being a nurse is accepting that you have to understand when a patient, folks and doctors treat you rudely. Bad mouthing you whenever they want to, not considering your emotions and feelings as a human. Making faces isn’t allowed, you have to stay pleasant or else what you show will be used against you. Anyway, because we are bound to listen and having this infinity like patience at all times, we never talk back. Instead, we are a mediator in times of toxic situations.
Being a nurse is getting paid lower than other professionals, and there’s nothing we can do about it. Whoever nursing council appeals to the government, no one gives us the chance to be treated fairly.
Being a nurse is working in a ratio that is far beyond what all nursing books are stating with regards to nurse-patient ratio. Juggling all the works needed, but staying focus not to compromised the health of every patient.
I am a NURSE and it is what I love to do despite what I encounter every day. I will still be committed to be a part of this ministry of healing and to compassionately devote myself to the healthcare field. To shine for Jesus, to touch the lives of every patient, to be blessed and be a blessing to them as well.
