One of the biggest problem as we age is the lack of effort we put into discovering new(er) music. We tend to use our limited free listening time to revel in the music we grew up with. Silly us. I’m ashamed to say I’d never heard of (much less heard) of Train. But in putting together a playlist in Tidal their song “Marry Me” was a suggestion at the bottom of the page. I, in a moment of weakness, clicked on it and was blown away by just how good it was. I then pulled up the album it was from, “Save Me San Francisco,” and gave that a listen. I was hooked. So, looking to see what was available I ran across this 5 CD set of their initial five albums for the price of a single CD. Yeah, little to no album info, and cardboard jackets, but damn, the music is awesome. Guess this old dog learned a new trick - be more open to new music. Yesterday signaled the first day of autumn. Today started out cold (below freezing, barely) but is supposed to warm into the mid 60’s (about 18 degrees Celsius) but it ain’t there yet. Sun is trying to shine through some high clouds, and there’s a light breeze blowing (which doesn’t help the comfort level). Trip up the Cog Railroad to the top of Mount Washington, NH. Beautiful at the bottom, not so much at the top (ha! Talk about understatements). I walk a mile a day, everyday. Today the weather report called for heavy rain (100% chance). I could hear it raining when I woke up. Streets were wet when I check out the window. Got all dressed for a wet walk. So what happens? Yep, missed it. Oh it sprinkled a bit, but I could have left the rain jacket at home and been fine. Ah well, alls well that ends well, my walk was fine. My favorite Dire Straits album, as remastered on hybrid stereo SACD by Mobile Fidelity. While I already had the Japanese single layer SACD, I’ve come to appreciate what Mo-Fi dud in their remastering of the Dire Straits catalog. So buying this release was a no-brainer. I think side one may very well be the most perfect side of music I’ve ever heard. Three songs, “Tunnel Of Love,” “Romeo And Juliet,” and “Skateaway” perfectly in tune with each other. When I first bought the LP years ago, I never (I repeat, never) listened to side two. After hearing those first three songs, I didn’t think anything could measure up. When I got the CD, I finally gave in and listened to the whole album. And while side two is fine, I still don’t think it reaches the heights reached by side one. As to how well Mo-Fi’s remastering affected the sound, let’s just say I don’t miss my LP. If you’re a Dire Straits fan, these SACD remasters are an easy recommendation. Great music reproduced greatly. Just received the new Intervention Records SACD of Joe Jackson’s “Body and Soul.” Mimicking the classic look of Sonny Rollin’s Blue Note album (right down to the design of the rear cover), this is Jackson’s stab at jazz infused alternate rock. That it works is a testament to Jackson and producer David Kershenbaum’s vision and tenacity. Five weeks of trying, rejecting and finally finding the proper equipment and laying down each track, but the end results were like nothing Jackson had released previously. Mastered by Kevin Gray for Intervention, the sound is warm, detailed and clean - not bad for not having the original master tapes to work with (or so the rumor goes). If you loved the original release, this new hybrid stereo SACD will definitely bring a smile to your face. If you’re (as I am) just discovering Jackson, I doubt you’ll find a better sounding introduction. I have a number of hybrid stereo/multichannel SACD’s by Hiromi Uehara on the old Telarc label. And while her mixture of real jazz and fusion always stands out, this album, “Brain,” is my personal favorite. This trio session had her back by either Tony Gray or Anthony Jackson on bass (Jackson would go on to become her regular bassist) and drummer Martin Valihora handle these eight Hiromi originals perfectly. The music alternates between fusion infused jazz to more traditional, straight ahead jazz offerings. And while I can enjoy the fusion inspired tunes, it the more straight ahead jazz tunes like the second track “If....,” that I totally get into. Yes, there’s more electronic instrumentation that I might prefer, but the music supersedes the instrumentation and just drags you in. Hiromi has all the talent in the world, and “Brain” shows it to its fullest advantage. I highly recommend you check her out. Good day for a trip back in time to when this was “jazz” to my rock only ears. Albums like this one, and artists like Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Jean-Luc Pontus, Brian Auger, and groups like this one, Return To Forever we’re helping shape my musical landscape long before I discovered Miles Davis (and through him, jazz). But the music and musicianship on this album captivated me from the start. The list of musicians in this group was outstanding. John McLaughlin, Jerry Goodman, Jan Hammer, Rick Laird, and Billy Cobham were superb musicians of and by themselves, but combined, created one of the major fusion groups. This hybrid stereo/multichannel SACD by the late, lamented Audio Fidelity is outstanding! If you can find a copy, do not pass it up. And if you own it, maybe it’s time to give it another spin.
