I feel the need to say out every time I see this post- This is StarCaptainYork, a nonbinary Captain America cosplayer who uses he/they pronouns!

They’ve said in the past that they started using the pride version of the American flag because he went to pride events in the basic cosplay, and overly patriotic bigots thought he was on their side. So they decided that they needed to make it perfectly clear whose side they were on

Who is in control?

People who think that Steve's motivation in Captain America: Civil War was about Bucky so fundamentally misunderstand Steve Rogers as a character that I have to wonder if we actually watched the same movie.

Steve's opposition to the Accords had nothing to do with Bucky. Full stop. Even if Bucky didn't exist, CA:CW would still have played out the exact same way (except the fight with Tony at the end, obviously). Sooner or later, Steve would have run into a situation where he felt compelled to act, but doing so would go against the Accords. In CA:CW, that situation happened to be the kill order on Bucky, but it could have been a totally different situation and the result would still have been the same. Steve would have chosen to act, knowing it went against the Accords, and he would have found himself on the opposite side of the law. Even the ones who actually signed the Accords, i.e team Iron Man, found themselves in that situation eventually:

Natasha chose to go against orders and let Steve and Bucky get away after the airport fight so they could stop the other winter soldiers.

Tony chose to go against Ross's direct orders and went to help Steve in Siberia.

Vision went on the run with Wanda and helped her avoid arrest.

Rhodey went against Ross's direct orders and chose to help Cap and the rest in Infinity War instead of arresting them.

All of them found themselves in situations where they chose to act in violation of the Accords, because to not do so would be morally wrong. Which was Steve's entire point. Legality isn't the same as morality and putting their powers in the hands of political agendas would inevitably cause the Avengers to either have to fight someone who didn't deserve to be fought, or to be kept from fighting someone who should have been stopped. As shown in the examples above.

So Bucky was totally irrelevant to Steve's decision regarding the Accords. Bucky or no Bucky, Steve would have refused to sign, found himself in a situation where he felt morally compelled to act, and ended up with an arrest warrant on his ass. Which, presumably, Tony would have tried to carry out. And boom, the general plot of the movie happens anyway. That's what the civil war was about, not Steve's relationship with Bucky. The fact that it was Bucky's situation that was the catalyst, instead of some other thing, was coincidental (or, rather, it was because it's a Cap movie and personal stakes as a secondary/parallel plot is more narratively compelling).

I’m listening to “Rock n Roll is King,” by ELO and it hit me.

Steve and Bucky went straight from swing, big band, and Jazz music to whatever the fuck was happening in 2014 ish. What a shock to the system!!

Who taught them about rock music and Elvis and The Beatles? Who taught them how music changed and shaped the world?

Funny how so many fics and even the MCU itself had things like “Star Wars” and the internet. But what about everything in between? So many culturally significant things happened in that 70 odd years and Star Wars was the best they could do?

I mean I get that the MCU wanted to just quickly throw in stuff for the whole “man out of time thing” without actually dealing with it properly or how it would have affected him mentally.

But when he first meets up with the soon to be Avengers and he hears AC/DC?

Or music in shops or cafes. Sitting and sketching a new modern skyline and he can’t help but listen to some lyrics and it’s rap music or hard rock and he’s like “what did they just say???”

Steve Rogers would NOT understand that reference!

Not to take the fun out of anyone's headcanons (you do you) but if we're being serious here for a minute, it is very likely that Steve's (and later Bucky's) response to the majority of modern music would—at least initially—not be a positive one. There'd be a lot of "What the fuck is that noise and why is everyone screaming all the time and what the hell are they even screaming about?"

And that's not because Steve is boring or incurious or an "old man," but because

(1) he simply has no familiarity with the sound of modern music; the guy has never even heard of a synthesizer, a distortion pedal, or a drum computer! Shit, he barely knows what an electric guitar is and if someone were to show him a double-necked flying V, he would probably go 'instrument...with a lot of strings???'

(2) he lacks any historical, cultural, and sociopolitical context—especially for (at least originally) heavily subculture-driven genres like hip hop, punk, metal etc. New genres of music* do not happen (and find broad acceptance) overnight. They develop and change over time** and are often heavily tied to and embedded in political and/or cultural movements—movements Steve does not know about or understand when he comes out of the ice.

He would not immediately "get" the sound and understand the intricacies of hip hop, for example, because he lacks the knowledge of its musical and cultural origins. Disco, funk, soul, you say? Never heard of them let alone listened to them! Not only is he not familiar with the popular music genres of the past 70 years, he's not even familiar with most of the styles and movements they originate from or reference. Can you imagine trying to explain emocore or new wave revival to Steve? 2012!Steve would not discover, idk, Nirvana and be like 'Oh, I see and appreciate how grunge is a response to and a repudiation of the vapidity and excesses of 80s hair metal!'

That man from the 1940s would not fucking say that. And he would not fucking listen to My Chemical Romance. He doesn't even know who Chuck Berry is!!

**and even then...to our modern ears this may all sound pretty tame now, but contemporary audiences lost their shit—and not necessarily in a good way—when Dylan went electric or The Beatles released 'Helter Skelter' and they heard That Riff with Paul McCartney screaming over it like a madman for the first time. And that was all the way back in in the 60s—more than 20 years after Steve and Bucky had supposedly died.
