Welcome to my new and improved countryhumans blog! My old one kind of died, so I've made the executive decision to simply delete it and make a new one, considering I wasn't very active there anyway and had made barely any posts despite the mountains of art I have at the ready-

Anyhow! Now for some general information;

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I try to keep my countryhumans as historically and culturally accurate as possible - but even with research, mistakes can still happen. Therefore, criticism is always welcome, just keep it civil >:) Also despite wanting to be accurate, turning something as diverse as a country into a singular character will always mean that these are essentially my oc's and they are different from the "stereotypical" countryhumans you may see around. While I do have lore for these guys with lots of headcanons for them all, this account will be focused on my art - I might make some lore focused post some day if there's any interest there though :D yeah that's mostly it-

Japan my beloved <3 design reference sheet below the cut, tw for non-sexual nudity! :D

even tho most of the general information is already written on the ref, I'll add some more notes again >:)

I tried to blend traditional Japanese attire with a modern formal look for her clothing design

I find cat Japan to be pretty overused and the koi is (in my most humblest opinion) a more well known Japanese symbol

additionally, as an island nation, an aquatic animal fits well

Kintsugi is a Japanese tradition were something broken (especially cutlery etc) is repaired with gold :D

the design on the back of the jacket is the seal of the japanese government

I added aspects of the rising sun flag into her body patterns, cuz I like including past flags somewhere on the body, as long as it's not the face, which is reserved for the current flag!

the buckle on her belt is the Imperial Crest of Japan

something to note about her as a character - she has been a representative since 1603, as the Tokugawa Shogunate. And yes, that means that she was also the representative of the Japanese Empire!

Germany!!!!!

I would like to state that he also has wings- I just expertly forgot to draw them in this ref <3

ANYWAY it's time for character notes >:)

firstly, something about the character himself - Germany has been the same person since the first creation of unified German state, that being the German Empire. During the times of the Empire, "Germany" represented the government, his twin "G.E.", the monarchy. After World War One and the death of the Empire, only "Germany" remained. N@zi Germany is a seperate personification, as it was born out of a political party, but Germany is NOT his son. he also represented the ACC after WW2 and was physically split into two seperate people during the Cold War. The scar is a left-over from the reunification of the two bodies into one

the tattoo is a motive from the East German coat of arms - wheat/grains are a common symbol found in communist seals

his right horn was broken during the Cold War, when his body was split. Both sides only had one horn each, West G. had the left, East G. the right. East's horn was broken by the USSR, which did not revert back after reunification

as mentioned, he also has wings, even though they are not depicted here. They come from the Black Eagle present on Germany's coat of arms

he carries an Iron Cross on a chain around his neck and was a gift from Prussia. Nowadays the cross is often associated with right wing politics, but it was originally created in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars as an award and has its roots in the Teutonic Order

as a German myself, I decided to be extra silly with this one. yum yum

For some design notes:

he has four eyes, each one representing one of the countries that make up the UK; pale green - England, blue - Scotland, orange - Wales, dark green - Ireland

I gave him octopus features. I've got a couple of reasons for this, mostly because as an island nation, a marine animal is a nice fit, but mostly, because after many years and even more failed attempts, I have found that making him a human-lion-unicorn-dragon-deer cimera just wouldn't work. jk actually I just love octopi <3

usually dresses somewhere between formal and casual - think dark academia fashion

in my old design, the clothes were all different shades of brown. I changed for one, because it clashed too much with the dark blue skin and secondly, because it looked to simialr to England

the tartan he is wearing is an actual pattern, called the "Royal Steward". In Scotland the different patterns symbolise the different clans, but since this one belonged tothe royal family the founded the Kingdom of Great Britain, I found it fitting to include

also, depsite "only" existing since 1707, his physical age is determined by the average of his union members and he shares all of their memories. Unlike a normal country, the UK never really had a childhood in any form. As a union, he is LITERALLY made up of the countries in the union - they fuse together to give him a body! :D
