Does anyone else have a super specific taste in games? Like I play Skyrim because it's the closest to the "perfect game" that I'll get, but it's still lacking. I want a game that's story-driven but still gives the player free will, open world, character customization, amazing graphics, the ability to change camera POVs, and is not confining as to what you can do in your free time. But that game doesn't exist yet

I was thinking about this because of a discussion elsewhere on Tumblr: science clearly shows evolution exists (we can even observe it in modern humans, with increasing height and bust sizes!), but the opening of Genesis seems to suggest G-d created everything and so it is and so it stayed. I know how I explain this apparent contradiction—but what about Christians?
There are two main camps (if we ignore the “I don’t know” Christians). There are the (largely liberal) Christians who see evolution as how God made everything. Then there are the (usually conservative) Christians who insist that the Earth is young and God made everything exactly as described in Genesis. The most outspoken group from the second camp are the creationists who work very hard to prove “and so it is and so it stayed” but tend to misunderstand the science.
I am an “I don’t know” because I am simply not sure at all.
How can’t you be sure? Evolution is a proven theory and one of the many swords that killed god over the last few hundred years. You either acknowledge evolution as fact and therefore don’t believe in the bible or you don’t believe it as fact which makes you wrong.
Why “don’t know”? That is an easy one. I don’t know because (1) I was not there and did not see it, (2) I have not any experiments to find answers; and (3) whatever way I were to come done on this issue, it would be based on trust (faith, if you will) on the testimony of others.
I am comfortable admitting to having doubts, questions, and acknowledged gaps in my understanding. I suspect that all people have doubts, questions, and knowledge gaps. I know, at least, that I do. I am in no particular rush to take any given answer just because someone said it and then proclaim it the unadulterated truth. The facts don’t need me to believe in them - they remain facts regardless of me. Facts just are. They cannot be changed, only found.
You don’t know because you don’t want to. There’s plenty of literature, there’s actually experiments involving bacteria adapting to various environments through evolution.
Taking the word of others without proof and an explanation of that proof is what started the dark ages.

I am a “don’t know” because all I (personally) have to go on is the word of others. I’ve not run any tests, examined large bodies of evidence, or settled the philosophy of it. Thus, regardless of which of the many ways I could come down on this issue they are, without exception, examples of taking one group or another at their word.
My reason for not exploring all the presented arguments and data is that the question does not matter to me. Were I to know, with utter certainty, how we all started, would I be richer, healthier, or better fed? Can knowing pay my bills or heat my home? The question of how I live the life I have left seems more pressing than wondering, “how did this all start?”. There are better people than I digging into that question and I am happy to let them get on with it.
Religion breeds ignorance and ignorance leads to stones being thrown, planes flying into buildings and war. It’s not a matter of knowing how everything started (which isn’t evolution btw), it’s about people denying reality for fiction which leads to a lot of nasty shit.
The “free will” explanation for why god allows evil to exist never satisfied me. And I think I’ve finally figured out why?
Does free will exist in heaven? Would we be able to act freely or would we be automatons there? We’re told free will is a gift to mankind for us to make our own choices but evil is the cost of that gift. And that without free will life would be miserable and joyless. But if we can have free will without evil in heaven, then that means god is able to give us the former without the latter on earth right? Free will is either not the root of evil or god just gave a faulty present.
in short: the “mankind being created by a perfect, loving, and merciful god” theory makes not a flying fuck of sense.

So the theory, as per Augustine, is that there are two kinds of free will: libertas and liberum arbitrium. The second is what we normally think of as a free will, the freedom to make choices without regard to morality. The first is the freedom to do the right thing. Adam, the theory goes, had both. He could make choices, and among the choices he could make were the right ones. Since the Fall, we only have liberum abritrium: we can make choices, but since we’re in bondage to sin, our choices are inherently tainted. In Heaven we will have libertas but not liberum arbitrium, so all our choices, freely made, will be to do the right thing.
Going off of what you’ve said here (I haven’t read Augustine), Augustine seems to be performing linguistic acrobatics that’s meant to re-enforce our “flawed and sinful” nature, to support his pre-determined view rather than explore reason and philosophy. Choices that involve no morality are like what drink do I want, but morality choices are like choosing to jump into a freezing river to save a child, not to steal something you can get away with, or washing your hands when no one else is in the restroom. All of these choices are available to us now.
Personally never got the free will thing. If god is truely omniscient and we are created by him then surely he knows everything we will do in life based off how he made each person meaning we are just on the rails he put us in from birth. Omniscience is also my issue with “the old testement doesn’t count” if he’s all knowing why did he need a part 2 to retcon the first text?

Well, you got me red handed. My desire for a position in a children’s hospital to use play to help teach them about cancer and be their support as they undergo unimaginable things? It’s all a ruse to earn less than teachers make and socially advance myself, nothing about serving God’s children.
