Heavy Heart
Rebar, Tulle Fabric, belts
This piece explores the relationship between such a heavy and flexible material like rebar and an anatomical heart. The heaviness and large size of this abstract heart being carried on my back are to represent the battles of living with heartbreak and emotions everyday. This sculpture requires two people to put on, has to be manipulated to fit through doors, affects ones balance, and makes it difficult to do basic tasks like tying shoelaces or drinking from a water fountain. Thinking with your heart is often more difficult and painful than with your brain but in the end can be more rewarding with support. Although heavy, the support system for my sculpture are the belts keeping the heart stable on my back and shoulders, the help of someone putting it on me, the rebar welded together, and the stitches keeping the tulle fabric wrapped around the structure.
