TOXIC PARADISE // final statement
‘Toxic Paradise’ is derived from the realisation that in our society, so many people ignore the things they consider are ‘bad’, and use these toxic short term fixes while juxtaposing against their desires for the long term. It really annoys me when people complain about something that they have placed themselves in, I don’t mean the things that are out of reach, but rather
“I hate my job” — WHY DONT YOU QUIT OR FIND A NEW ONE
“Joanne don’t smoke. It’s a bad habit” — WHY ARE YOU LIGHTING A CIGARETTE WHILE SAYING THIS
“Save water / trees” — DO YOU REALISE HOW MUCH WATER IT TOOK TO MAKE YOUR $5 COTTON T-SHIRT FROM KMART
Like if you don’t like something about your life, then why don’t you change it?
That being said I think that there is always some anchor, that chains us to those short term fixes, everywhere you go someone will be telling you how to live your life or give you their opinions without you asking. What is manipulation and what is for your own good? Is everyone searching for their own paradise? When is enough enough? Or is it never going to be enough because their thoughts are subconsciously influencing us — making us think that their goals are our goals? What will you give up to get closer to your paradise? Will you ever get there?
I’d say my work is ambiguous and vague, allowing for different points of views to derive from my documentation of my installations out and about.
