rikard shrugs it off — if isaiah wanted to tell him he had a new girlfriend or something, he would. or, at least, he thought he would. it was weird for rikard to think about how to even talk to isa. he wanted to impress him, and maybe even rub, the little good he had, off on him. the main issue for rik was, however, that he was giving isaiah the same treatment that he would give anyone he was trying to impress — completely ignoring the fact that isaiah isn’t like the rest of his people in his life at all. he was ignorant to it, of course — just needing someone to talk to. and thankfully, he thought isa would listen. ❝ you’re right, ❞ he shrugged, taking isa’s words and shrugging off some of his ignorant exterior. ❝ the engagement kind of threw us both off. i had to follow narcissa outside after the excruciating dinner just to explain that i didn’t know about it then either. i didn’t want them to hate me, you know ? ❞ not yet, at least. but rikard knew it would come in due time. ❝ i think i’m just trying to look at the long-term — even if narcissa hates me, i can keep busy with the finances, the home … ❞ his demeanor changed then, hoping those weren’t the only things he had to look forward to. ❝ apologies — ❞ he coughs, rolling his shoulders back for the exterior to build up once again. ❝ how are you enjoying the party so far ? anything i can do to make it better ? ❞
𝑖𝑡'𝑠 𝑎 𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑎𝑛𝑡 surprise , to see rik give so quick . and isaiah offers an easy smile at first : a proud little thing . as varying as rikard can get in his attitude , isaiah does still hold out faith in him . it’s nice to see it validated . but as soon as his features warm , they go slack again . ❛ . . . it threw you off ? ❜ he frowns , ❛ i thought — wouldn’t your parents be discussing it , or something ? like having . . . dinners together . . . before that . . . ❜ the more isaiah speaks , the more he starts to feel the ever - familiar fish out of water spirit that encapsulates him half the time . he sort of assumed it’d be a family affair . he knows nothing of family , but he knows enough to realise everyone’s different , and norms for betrothals would likely be more evident if they were so standardized , so he trails off instead , rubbing his neck . ❛ no , no — i’m the one who should say sorry . sorry . i don’t actually know how these things go . but — i’m sure narcissa doesn’t hate you . it was probably obvious , ❜ he winces a bit , but smiles through it , not missing how rik straightens up again . ❛ i’ll vouch that you’re a terrible liar , if needed . there’s no way you’d be faking shock . you can’t exactly keep your mouth shut if your life depended on it , really , ❜ he teases again , but stills at the question . ❛ ah , no , ❜ he catches himself . ❛ i mean - it’s going fine . it’s just not exactly — my scene . ❜ the last thing he needs is for rik waste his time , trying , dragging him around in a way that earns isaiah nothing but looks of why him ? ❛ but hey , i can come find you later if i’m bored out of my mind , yeah ? i’m serious , you do have an actual birthday girl to devote some time to . i’ve got you on the right track and everything already , ❜ he throws him a grin with the shrug he offers .
