It was time with Linda’s 3 month review. She had taken the office by storm since her arrival. The numbers were amazing, and she seemed to have everyone at the office dancing to her drumbeat.
“Linda, I must say you’re off to an incredible start here. You’re delivering the best results this company has ever seen, and you seem to have a way with the other staff. I even saw Carol staying back late the other night to work on some things for you. What’s your secret?”
She smiled. “Why don’t you get me a drink, and I’ll tell you?”
I nodded. Soon, I returned with her beveridge.
“That’s my secret”, she grinned. “I ask, they do. Just like you just did”.
I looked down. Her grin widened. She leaned in. “Imagine how successful this company would be if I only had more authority….”
I was putty in her pretty Asian hands, and she knew it. I offered her the role of executive Vice President - a big pay rise and a corner office.
“I don’t know…..”, she mused. “I have such a busy personal life that taking on a bigger role at the office might be impossible. I’d need someone to take care of the menial things while I focused on the business…”
She let the silence sink in. “I could….uh…. that could be arranged”, I managed.
“Well I guess if I’m running the company, you’d have plenty of time spare to take care of the menial things”, she smiled.
“No, I uh, I didn’t mean me. I meant we could get someone to…”
She cut me off. “No, no, if I’m going to run this company, I need a woman with a proven track record of success to handle my personal life. Besides, you’d be a great PA!”
I was trembling. “Look, Linda…I’m not…”
Again she interrupted me. “Refer to me as Ms Lee, Tanya”.
That afternoon, Ms Lee moved into my office. “Tanya, my dry cleaning needs collecting, my car needs cleaning, my floors need vacuuming and I expect dinner served to me at 7. Think you can handle it?”
I stared at her. Young, beautiful, smart, manipulative and totally in control.
“I can handle it, Ms Lee”.
That smile! “Good girl, Tanya. Off you go.”
