Coach’s voice boomed across the track, loud enough for fans and rival competitors to hear, “Alright, team, jock check!” One by one, his athletes, faces burning with embarrassment, pulled open the front of their shorts or lifted a leg, exposing the white straps of their jockstraps to their coach. The public declaration of their underwear turned the entire meet into a spectacle. Fans spent the afternoon with their eyes peeled, trying to catch a glimpse of the jockstrap lines through the thin material of their track shorts. During the pole vault and long jump events, all eyes were on the athletes’ groins, hoping to catch a flash of a white leg strap or the distinct bulge of the jock’s pouch as they flew through the air.
