Exercise #5

1. The product that the advertisement is promoting is a thrift shop called Plato's Closet. It is located in Reading, PA and it is advertising the fact that they both buy your clothes and sell clothes as well.

2. The ad is popped up while listening to music but it also had a 15 second audio advertisement between songs on Pandora. The audio advertisement talked about the store and where it was located and what it does while having a blank screen on the phone. While during listening to music, this physical ad popped up and showed me that they are advertising selling and buying clothes and gives you the location.

3. It is trying to promote its store because thousands of people listen to pandora, therefore by having the audio advertisement in between songs, where the listener has no other choice than to listen to it, on top of having the physical picture during the songs, thousands of different listeners will both listen to it as well as view it. I believe their pitch is the fact that they do not just sell high-end clothing but they will also buy your clothing and give you money for it, making it more unique than other stores.

4. The advertisement is explicitly communicating to the viewer both verbally and with words, that you should come shop at Plato's closet because not only do they sell high-end clothes at a low cost, but they will buy your very own clothes and give you money in return for their worth.

1. Although the news on the TV and the newspaper I have chosen are on two different "topics" as you could say, I feel that the newspaper gave more sufficient news. The news on the television is limited in their time and often read quickly. Whereas the newspaper gives more detail as well as being accessible at all times. With the newspaper, you can carry this around with you all day whereas you have to tune into the news station at a certain time of the day to catch the brief news.

2. When judging the "newsworthiness", I based my rankings off of the importance of the news and how it would effect the community within the area or even the entire world. For the Fox 29 news, I found that "President Obama Sets New Sanctions on Russia" as the most important news and the "Starbucks trying out alcohol" for new drinks as the least important. The report on Obama I felt was the most important because he is our president and his decision will effect the entire country as a whole, whereas, although Starbucks is a yummy restaurant, it lacks the importance of the country as a whole. When reading the newspaper, I ranked the article Community finds voice in Advocate as the most important piece and Four fencers aim for title as the least. The reasoning for my rankings is because the newspaper is a local newspaper for Temple University and the community and the article about the community has an effect on both the University and the community around it. I ranked the fencers as the least important because although it is great they are aiming for the title, that will effect the least amount of people throughout the University and community.

3. I felt that the news reports from the news station were somewhat relevant to me because it was coming from a local news station in Philadelphia. Majority of the pieces were relevant to the area as a whole whereas a small portion was to notify us of what was going on in the nation itself. In the newspaper, majority of it was relevant to me due to the fact that it was The Temple News and I attend Temple University. Although there were articles about the community outside of the university I still felt the importance of it because Temple is very intertwined with its surrounding community.

4. Due to the choices of material I picked for this exercise I did not find any overlapping. Because this was a newspaper from The Temple News, it was focused more on Temple University news as well as the community surrounding it, whereas the news station was more of Philadelphia as a whole as well as the nation. If I would have picked the newspaper that was not just related to the school, I feel there would have been overlapping. I feel that they would have mainly been on the bigger stories that effect the entire country because those are the ones that are the most important and people need to know about.

Reading response 3/12

1. The internet and convergence has altered the magazine industry in many ways. In Chapter nine it is stated that "although the internet was initially viewed as the death knell of print magazines, the industry now embraces it." (328) The internet has made it more accessible to read magazines and magazine articles no matter where you are. Because of the expenses of things such as paper, printing and postage, the ability to have Web site magazines makes it easier to manage while expanding the amount of consumers worldwide. Another way the internet has helped with online magazines is because they are given opportunities to consumers that they do not have with printed versions. The consumers can do things such as blog, play games and other interactive components. (328)

2. The Gutenberg printing press revolution was a revolution that made printing books possible and many impacts on people further down the road into the future. He adapted the design of his printing press from the design of wine presses. (350) Gutenberg and his staff printed the first so-called books but it required months to produce along with several printers and 6 presses. The printing press transformed society and the people in it. The printing of books gave people the opportunity to "differentiate themselves as individuals" (350) It gave them the possibility of accessing ideas, beyond their own physical experiences, from all over the world.

3. The most reading that I do during a day would have to be reading on my smartphone. Outside of class and schoolwork, I spend most of my time on my smartphone reading social media networks such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. I have around the same amount of physical readings from things such as books everyday for my homework for classes. I feel that I read less than the previous generations because I am occupied by other things than the newspaper or books. I am occupied by my smartphone and social media and therefore read less of the other things.

1. I was unable to find how many people watched the show and the ratings. My prediction is that it was a smaller audience than in the evening because it was in the afternoon and many people are busy during the day and unable to watch TV.

2. My assumption on who was watching the show Two and a Half men during this time period would be young to mid adults. There are many reasons why I can make this assumption. It is most definitely not appropriate for younger children to watch this show because of the language and storylines. Specifically, the first episode I watched was about someone getting laid therefore ruling out the younger children for who watches it. During this specific time period, I feel that more of younger adults would be watching it at this time. Most likely college students would be watching at this time because they may not have class and are able to watch it. While young adults such as college students are able to watch it, mid-adults are most likely working and unable to watch at this time period. I feel that it is equal when talking about which gender watches the show. It is a comedy show and has both woman and men in the show. It may be more directed towards guys because the two main characters are men, but I feel that both genders still watch it.

3. The commercials did not have much of a connection to the show and I feel they were just randomly placed into the show for advertising. I noticed some of the commercials repeating themselves from the first episode and the second episode because they were two different episodes each approximately 30 minutes. The only connection I felt with the commercials and the TV show was that some of the commercial such as the snicker’s commercial were funny and it was a comedy show so I feel they were directing towards the viewers who watch the show for comedy. The program is related to the commercial breaks in a way that sets the viewers up to want to continue to watch. They often cut to commercials when the viewer was about to find something out, forcing them to want to watch the commercials so they can find out what happens when the program is back on.

4. I learned many things when attempting this assignment. Because I re-watched the episodes and studied the connections with the show and the commercial breaks I found out very interesting things. It is interesting that the show is portrayed as a half hour show when in reality it is less than that due to the commercials. I also found interesting that when looking at the time of commercial breaks it is usually only a couple of minutes but it seems so much longer because you are waiting around for your show to come back on.

Ch. 6 Reading Response - 12/24

1. I do not usually watch a lot of television, especially now being in college but when I do I watch it on the TV in my dorm. I also watch movies on my laptop through a bootleg website and also through Netflix. I believe that for our future television industry they will be coming out with more 3D television sets because those are becoming more and more popular today. I feel they will in general, still make a good profit because almost everyone in the world watches television at least once a day.

2. There are quite a few impacts that have been made on television industry, its business models, and audiences viewing habits due to convergence. According to the textbook, on page 206, some of the biggest impacts are the ability to watch shows on DVRs, Laptops or mobile devices. Besides the fact that you can watch it at your convenience, it also little to no cost. If you know you are going to miss a show, you have the ability to record it with a DVR (if you have one) and watch at a later time or whenever you are free. Also, if you are somewhere without access to a TV and you have your laptop or mobile device, you are able to go on the internet and watch what you would like to. There have been streaming websites made such as Hulu, which allows people to watch episodes of shows for free, with ads. (pg. 207) The convergence of the Television industry is making it easier on us consumers to have the ability to watch whatever we want, wherever we want, whenever we want, at the easier convenience.

3. Neil Postman's perspective on Television in "The Huxleyian Warning" is a very interesting perspective. He states on the first page of the reading, "When a population becomes distracted by trivia, when cultural life is redefined as a perpetual round of entertainments when serious public conversation becomes a form of baby-talk, when, in short, a people become and audience and their public business a vaudeville act, then a nation finds itself at risk; culture death is a clear possibility." He also states on the last page of the previous chapter, "Mainly, they will have learned that learning is a form of entertainment or, more precisely, that anything worth learning can take a form of an entertainment, and ought to." He clearly has negative thoughts toward the ongoing rise of the television industry and the reliability us viewers have on it. He feels that the technological distractions are killing printed languages. He believes that awareness is the key to solving this problem I agree with Neil's perspective because I feel that we should start to become more aware of how we watch television. I agree with the fact that we still have to discover what television actually is as a medium.

Exercise #2: Media Consumption Experiment

1. My experiment was studying video games and the impact that they have on people, especially guys, now-a-days. I focused on video games because there is a lot of contraversy on the impact of video games on human life and how they live. Some people believe the violence of video games could be a reason for the increase of shootings in this century. As I went to my boyfriend's college this weekend, I studied him and his roommate as they played video games such as basketball and soccer. I choose this because I felt it was interesting to watch and see how into it they got even though it's not real life.

2. Based on my experiment I can conclude that video games are most definitely impacting people. The newer the games become the more realistic they are, therefore making it easier to get more into the game and increase the intensity. While observing his roommate play the video game, he was genuinely getting angry at the game whenever it did something that was not what he planned. He rose his voice multiple times, cursing and yelling at the television screen. Watching this was a surprise to me because I am not usually around people that play video games and it was humorous to me because of how intense he was getting. This shows that the more realistic the video games get and the animation and quality increase, it impacts the player and makes it easier to get sucked into the world of the video game.

3. The increase and change in the use of media and technology today compared to 10 years ago is drastic. The technology has increased dramatically and people have become incredibly dependent on it. Whether it is video games, cell phones, computers, etc. people are most likely attached to it at the hip. 10 years ago, I was 9 years old and I did not own half of the technology I do today. We had a house computer and that was what I relied on mostly for media. I also did not have things such as Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. I consumed most of my time 10 years ago playing games and watching TV to pass up time whereas today, I consume majority of my time on my cell phone. The change of technology and reliance on it has risen so much over the past 10 years.

4. I do not consider myself addicted to my cell phone however I do consider myself heavily relied to it. My cell phone is how I find everything out from texting and calling my friends and family to using the internet to find out new media. However, I still grew up at a time of face-to-face conversation therefore I still have good communication skills. I do not consider myself addicted because if I needed to go without my cell phone I most definitely could. Some people today however, are so heavily relied on their cell phones that that is their own way of communication. I feel that cell phones and technology is taking face-to-face communication away from people and making it harder for younger people to gain these communication skills that I was able to learn when I was younger. Kids today are growing up in a world where I'd say a good 50% of communication is done through a screen instead of face-to-face, making these kids lack the needed communication skills to be a well-rounded individual.

chapter 4 and 5 reading repsonse

1. The internet and media convergence has impacted the music and radio industries in many ways. When the internet became more popular, it became a reliable place to get music other than CDs and record players. When the MP3 file format was developed in 1922, it became very popular and in the 1990's, consumers began to swap music files freely online without a charge. However, music began to be traded by violating copyright laws and in 2001, the Supreme Court ruled free music-file swapping illegal because of these violations. However, there are still many other way to illegally download music without charge. Industries have altered their ways creating things such as "music in the cloud" making it little to no charge for consumers to listen to music and personalize playlists to fit their needs. Some of these "music in a cloud" services include Pandora, Rhapsody, Spotify etc. (pg. 128)

2. I obtain my music through a youtube to MP3 converter. I look up the songs I want on youtube and copy the link into the converter and it converts the video/song into an MP3 which I then drag into my iTunes. The consumers are benefitting in ways such as these because they are getting music without charge, however doing it illegally. I feel that iTunes is starting to struggle because of these ways that make music available for free.

3. in 1912 Congress passed and act The Radio Act of 1912, stating that radio waves were technically a "natural resource" meaning that not one person could own them and that they were the collective property of all Americans. (pg. 162) The act required all wireless station to obtain radio licenses from the Commerce Department making them technically be the ones who control it. (pg. 162)

Media and Culture Ch. 2 Reading Response

1. According to the reading, convergence is defined as the technological merging of content in different mass media. (page 58) One technological innovation that contributed to the development of this was the telephone which was invented in the 1870s. Another technological innovation was the Television which was invented in the 1950s. Some challenges that this develop poses is the ability to put out false information. If people rely so much on the media and false information is put out, the people will believe it.

2. According to the reading net neutrality refers to the principle that every web site and every user-whether a multinational corporation or you-has the right to the same Internet network and speed and access. For net supporters, they feel that without net neutrality, it would hurt small businesses and internet innovators who are not able to afford the fastest connections that the larger corporations are able to afford. The people against it want to be able to provide faster connection to clients that will and are able to pay for this at higher expenses. I am a supporter of net neutrality and feel that every user should have the right to the same Internet network and speed

What is the sign?

1. The sign I chose to research is the "blood" gang sign. This sign is used by the Bloods who were founded in the city of Compton in Los Angeles County in California. It was founded in the year of 1972. It is used as both a visual and verbal way of identifying the gang and/or a gang member.

2. The picture above is an example of an icon blood sign. It is a picture of a member doing the blood sign with their fingers. An example of the indexical aspect of the blood gang sign is if you went up to a member of the gang and their hands made the sign physically. This sign is a symbol of the blood gang because the fingers are spelling out blood and it is a known sign for the blood gang.

3. The signifier of the blood gang sign is the word Blood in text when talking about the gang. The signified is a picture of the Blood hand signal like the picture above. The referent is the combining of both hands and fingers to spell out the word blood.

4. One thing I found interesting about the sign is that one could "throw up" the sign to represent that they are a member of the gang when they see a fellow member, or they could "throw it up" to scare off other gangs.

What is the meaning of The Medium is the Message?

1. The meaning of "the medium is the message" is explained in detail throughout this meaning. According to McLuhan, he states "We can know the nature and characteristics of anything we conceive or create by virtue of the changes-often unnoticed and non-obvious changes-that they effect." I feel that this is his meaning of "the medium is the message."

2. McLuhan's definition of "medium" in his work Understanding Media, is "any extension of ourselves." He looks at medium in a sense of growing and feels that this extension is "anything from which a change emerges."

3. McLuhan's definition of "message" is to "look beyond the obvious and seek the non-obvious changes or effects that are enabled, enhanced, accelerated or extended by the new thing."

4. McLuhan's perspective on content in relation to "the medium is the message" is that he feels we are distracted by the content of the medium. He states that "it is only too typical that the "content" of any medium blinds us to the character of the medium. And it is the character of the medium that is its potency or effect - its message."
