Like Real People Do Chapter 5 is Up!

Soooooo I’m vaguely back from the dead and was inspired by some lovely folks to pick this bad boy back up. I have fragments for at least five more chapters, but Chapter 5 can be found right here!

I’m replaying Part I and the fact that Joel’s exact wind chime ends up in Jackson kills me. Because we know Joel doesn’t go back to Austin. Tommy does. He took a photo of his brother and his niece with him, not expecting to ever see his brother again. Which means he took the wind chimes with him too. He went home after fighting with Joel and, despite all the anger and animosity between them in the fight, took things he knew meant the world to his brother. Sure, there is a slim chance Joel could have made himself a new wind chime, but without reference, even from memory it’s difficult to replicate something so accurately after twenty some odd years. The wind chimes could have been something Joel made himself or a gift from Sarah and Tommy. Whatever it meant to Joel, it meant enough for Tommy to travel with. To bring his brother home to Jackson with him. To keep his big brother alive in some way.

You know, Joel mentions while in SLC with Ellie that he would sit out on the porch in nice weather and just pick away at his 6 string.

I’d like to imagine him playing along with the wind chimes and getting really good at improvising on his guitar.

And the reason Tommy takes the chimes when he returns to Austin is bc if he listens to them hard enough he can sometimes hear his brother’s guitar on the wind.

Hello! I absolutely needed to make this post sooner, but here we are. I tend to write in fits and starts because my health is aligned to cycles of “okay” to “desperately not okay” ~every 6 months. It makes me inconsistent about a lot of things. Anyway, I’m better for now.

this is not usually a tlou fandom blog but i have thots. i’m watching a playthrough of the first game again and the way joel looks at tommy the moment after the first time he sees him kill an infected.. having just shot his neighbor too, and then witnessing his brother kill someone for the first time, and he barely has a second to process at all bc his daughter is still trapped in the wrecked car. and tommy used a brick, which feels so much more personal than a bullet. but joel takes a moment to give him a scared? awed? look. it’s the fucked-up recognition of “i know how that feels but also i don’t,” and the knowledge that tommy did it without hesitation to save his life. idk i think it puts into perspective the strength of their relationship throughout the rest of the games; the outbreak was hell and they survived it together bc they were both capable of killing. and they were able to recognize that in each other and accept it as a necessary skill. if that’s not brotherly bonding what is

Oh Tommy was traumatized? Mr. "nothing-but-nightmares-from-those-years?" Yeah? Just him? All Joel's fault? HMMMMM. I've always been super suspicious of that line of interpretation of their relationship.

Yeah, it's a brick first and then about five minutes later Tommy kills the soldier who shoots Sarah without a BLINK. Headshot, done. I'm sure Sarah getting killed hurt him, of course, but that was a gut reaction to "someone is probably going to shoot my brother now."

Maybe Tommy has nightmares of what Joel did to survive because he knows how easy it is for him personally to do the same/more. Joel, at the beginning of the Outbreak at least, was not the one that capability came easier to. He just got hollowed out enough by Sarah to persist like a traumatized ghost for ~20 years; Tommy still had a little life in 'im and felt beholden to his morals in a way Joel went "lol, nah." Basically he still had the capacity for horror in him, Joel's is full-ass gone in 2013, let alone 2033.

I'd shiv someone to learn why Tommy "never wanted to see [Joel's] fuckin' face again." Like what possibly crossed a rubicon in their relationship, that far in?

November Hiatus Apology/I Promise I’m Getting to Your Prompts!

This may fully be shouting into a void, but hey! I’m sorry I disappeared! 

Some really nice people prompted me! I have a bunch of little Scrivener drafts going for your prompts, but I kind of blinked and November whooshed past me. 

DM me for a fine list of excuses, character flaws, and poor choices, but, most importantly, I do commit to finishing those prompts, so hang with me! I keep adding little bits here and there and getting sidetracked by my Joel/oc fic so, here we are. I may not be prolific, but I *can* linger in one headspace for apparently...a whole quarantine.
