Under the assumption that he can’t read your mind, he’s left to investigate instead of reading you effortlessly. While it’s easy to do sometimes with your facial expressions, sometimes it can be challenging, especially if you’re trying really hard not to alert him about your emotional state. He can be a bit.. dramatic whenever you’re feeling anything negative. He tends to take it to the extreme as he genuinely hates seeing his mate suffer in any kind of way.
Edward pays close attention to your eyes. They’re so human, so beautiful and easy to attach feelings to them. He also pays close attention to your breathing patterns, as well as your posture. It’s a theme amongst many humans to have poor posture when feeling upset, to breathe more shallow or faster, and sometimes their eyes can get misty or glazed over by dissociation.
He has a very soft approach, his voice smooth and low, intimate and sweet. Brows furrowed. A cold hand reaching out for you, arms embracing you. Rubbing your head or back if you melt into his loving embrace. Eye contact. He needs to make sure that you’re not lying to him about why, or who caused it.
If you’re upset about someone else, as in they hurt your feelings or worse, he has a visible slip on keeping the anger from showing. After a moment he reels himself back into the conversation and comforts you by giving reassurance, physical touch, words of affirmation and encouragement, and promising you that they will never do that again.
Your tears hurt his dead, cold heart. If he were alive he’d probably be fighting the urge to tear up just from seeing you in pain. It burns and aches. He’d do anything to stop it, and he does. Whatever you need or want, he’s ready to make it happen immediately. There’s absolutely no wait.
Edward will wipe your cheeks and kiss you over and over, secretly enjoying how salty your tears taste. They’re uniquely yours and he has an odd fascination with them.
Edward is big on cuddling and talking it out. Once he hears how it slows your heart rate and feels how your body is less tense, he remembers to do it every time.
If you’re the type to feel embarrassed about crying in front of anyone, he’s quick to reassure you that it’s completely natural and he prefers you to let it out around him, even if you have snot running down your nose and you’re soaking his shirt. Your feelings matter the most to him, and he will never make you feel stupid or embarrassed for being human.
Cuddles, snacks, movies, kisses, he will even help you shower/take a bath if it was more serious and caused you to not want to do anything for yourself for a long period of time.
