Do you feel like ling chan wasn't appreciated enough in before the devil breaks you? She barely said anything and tbh she was only relevant when her new romance was shown with alma. Also do you know if there's any lingxalma blogs
You think so? Then I’ll be devils advocate, and defend her relevance to you. You obviously love her and so do I.
Alright, so first it is important to look at the layout of BtDBY. It is the first of the three books where all six of the Diviners (plus a bunch of the other non-Diviners) have PoVs. It’s a lot of ground to cover. Bray attempts; plot, romantic relationships, friendships, pasts, powers, 1920s American politics etc.
The first book mainly focuses on Evie, Theta, Memphis, and Sam. The second book was a lot of Ling and Henry.
Also, Ling is the quiet observant friend by nature (I relate, I am too), gaining positive energy by being in the presence of talkative and flamboyant friends like Evie and Henry.
So on to some of the great scenes with/about Ling in BtDBY:
During the Diviners meetings she took notes, and made some great theories on focusing their individual powers to make one strong power.
She was the first one to realize that they created an energy field due to their combined anger.
When the Diviners were upset with Sister Walker and Will and planned to disband she said “we need to learn more together, not for them, but for us”, they were all like “well if Ling says so then yes we should”.
Two of the Diviners (I think it was Theta and Henry, not sure) when in trouble stated that they wished they were Ling, calm and scientifically minded.
Ling freaking out that Henry was outside among the dead, and ordering everyone around.
Basically the whole Ling and Henry friendship. It gives me life.
That time Ling discovered that if she and Memphis sing “Old McDonald had a farm” together they’d be able to repel ghosts in an insane asylum. (My baby is made of pure genius right there)
I’m excited to see how Ling grows and I really love the friendship between all of the Diviners and the diversity and representation. Yes BtDBY wasn’t perfect, and personally I’d have loved the Diviners more if it started off with Ling’s PoV instead of Evie’s, but I adore this series and eagerly await the next book
I don’t know of any lingxalma blogs. I think ao3 has a few fics of them, maybe. Hopefully the Diviners fandom will grow, because it deserves one.
