This was a stupid idea. This was a stupid way to spend his afternoon. This was a stupid attempt to see if he could catch sight of her again… but here he was. Back at the little mom and pop bookstore where he had seen that woman time and time again slowly walking through the shelves scanning the titles to see if something would catch her eyes. He quietly prayed he would catch her attention one of these days, but it hadn’t happened yet.
What do you even do when approaching a woman like that in a bookstore? In a quiet place where she seemed so preoccupied by her task at hand that she might just simply shoo the man away the minute he approached. So here he was yet again walking through the bookshelves, his eyes scanning over the dusty books.

The small bell above the door gives away the new patron passing through, and as he spares a glance upwards he finds himself pausing. There she was, dressed warmly for the colder weather outside and adorning a small smile on her lips as she greeted the older woman that owned the shop. Her feet slowly moving across the hardwood floor with a small distinct creaking sound from the floor with each step.
‘Pretty’ He thought as he took her in fully. Her hair was styled in a manner he had seen a handful of times now, the rich (H/C) color held a soft shine in the warm lighting of the bookstore. Her lips still held that soft smile as she moved towards the book shelves, a certain gleam in her eyes that made his stomach twist slightly. She looked so content within such a small space, so happy to look over the titles and covers he was sure she had seen hundreds of times already.
His eyes move downward again, landing on the literature before him. This was a stupid idea, he had been coming for a little while now and she still hadn’t noticed him let alone looked his way.
“That one’s pretty good.” A soft voice next to him sounds, and he glances over to find her standing at his side. My brain momentarily stopping before he speaks up.
“I’m sorry?” He says with a slightly confused tone. “That book, It’s A Little Life, it’s a good choice.” She says as she gestures to the book he didn’t even realize was softly grasped in his palm. “Oh um…,” He glances down at it, his eyes taking in the black and grey cover for a moment, “Have you read it before?,” He ask, ‘Stupid question’ he thinks.
She nods softly, “Yeah, it’s one of my favorites. I’ve read it about 4 or 5 times now,” She explains with a soft smile. Her eyes momentarily look him over, “Jude is my favorite character in the book, his story and progression through the chapters is always heartbreaking.” She adds as her eyes meet his again.
“Oh, I’ll have to give it a read then,” He says as he glances back towards her, their eyes meeting as they both pause for a moment. “I’m Mikey.” He says as he offers up his free hand for a handshake. She glances down for a moment before taking his hand and giving a firm handshake, “(Y/n), it’s nice to meet you Mikey,” She says with a warm tone.
‘(Y/n)’ He repeats in his head as he takes in her details more up close. His eyes scanning across her face in a slow and deliberate manner wanting to ensure he got every detail. “Do you read much?” She ask, pulling him from his thoughts as they hands part. His palm felt oddly cold, but his stomach seemed to grow warm at the small interaction with her.
“Yeah, yes,” He says with a smile and a small nod of his head, “And you?” He ask and receives a small nod in return. “It’s what I like to fill up my free time with,” She says and he nods, “Do you have a favorite genre?” He ask pull the conversation along in a casual manner.
“Fantasy normally, I also enjoy a good mystery book. You?” She ask, “Ah no, not really. Whatever looks best normally works,” He says and she nods with a smile. “That’s a good way to look at it, don’t force yourself into one corner,” She says, a soft silence falling between them for a moment before she speaks again.
“I’m really sorry, I know this is a bit awkward but I’ve seen you around the store a few times and wanted to introduce myself properly,” She says with a bit of a sheepish tone, but that warm smile still gently spread across her lips. He words cause him to pause for a moment. She had noticed him around the store. She wanted to introduce herself. She had been nervous to approach him just the same as he was to her. “No, no, it’s alright. I’ve seen you in here as well, but was a bit worried about saying hello,” He admits.
A small look of relief falling over her features, “Oh okay cool,” She says with a more soft and warm tone. The smile seeming to spread across her lips easier, and reach her eyes properly now. “Would it be a bit of a stretch to ask for your number then?” She ask, a soft red creeping up her neck and onto her cheeks at her own question.
Silence hung in the air for a moment before he was finally able to answer, “No, yes- I mean yes you can have my number,” He says quickly as he pulls out his phone so they can exchange contact info. He could feel a small amount of heat washing over his face, a sure sign his cheeks probably held the same soft red hers did.
“Did you want to get something to eat after this? You could tell me more about this book,” He offers, wanting to prolong their meeting. Her smile widening somewhat as she nods, “I’d like that a lot,” She says with a smile.
A smile spreads across his lips as they start to type in the others numbers, maybe this wasn’t a stupid idea after all.
