My Body My Rules! #women psych

Reflection 6. Â Â 11-15-18
The more I learn about women stories the more surprise I get with the society we all live in. Stories as such described in the Boston Health article “Working toward mutuality, our relationship with men”, stories such as the life of Henrietta Lacks, are true life stories and situations that women have been going through for a while, but that many do not have any awareness that was happening and still is. Inequality between female and male exists, inequality in medical treatment for women exists, and it will continue to exist and many will not acknowledge it or even recognize that is happening. Women as Henrietta lack, show how they have taken advantage of women’s bodies, how unworthy societal institutions believe women are, that no explanation and permission to do something with their bodies is needed, to change our bodies or destroyed them testing drugs, testing treatments, how ignorant they think we are to not explain us what they are doing, and that’s only in one field of life, to not mention how mistreated and thought less than among our personal and intimate relationships women are.
As read in the stories of women in the article read, men as other institutions in society have taught men and women to live in inequality, but in addition to that the power given to men and many institutions are one of the factors that influence and control the experiences women go through in their relationships, workplace and many other fields. As the author says “we envision a relationship in which each partner would support the other, so both play a role in the world outside the home as well as in the home, and one partner does not gain power at the expense of the other”, women and men have different expectation when it comes to intimate relationships, but men have been given the power to decide what is best or not for their partners, a power not exactly given to them from women themselves.
It is depressive that women go through so many unfair situations, that they have had no control of, but that is why, all of these changes are happening, and in order to have drastic changes, we need to empower ourselves, to teach those that surround us what is righteous for us women as a group, teach men and society with knowledge, about our history, women stories of unfairness and abuse, we need to teach gender, and as we read in Radical Heterosexuality “ Men we love don't drive without their gender glasses on”, and this mentality should be apply not only for men but for everyone in society.
Black Women in the Global Prison Industrial Complex. Reflection #5
The more I learn, the more i realize that the word “ fairness” does not exist in the world of a woman. In addition to all the fields of life where women are discriminated, stepped on, and insulted, now we look at the issue of those women that are incarcerated at the moment, specially women of a dark color of skin. Sadly it seems to be that the world and specially men, keep finding the ways to keep women under control and unfortunately, suffering.Â
The issue of the Industrial Complex in Western countries, such as America, Australia, Canada and other, refers to the usage of women but specially back women, for the growing and expansion of jails in these countries. Its all about power and business. Women have less tolerance policies and higher punishment for the “ crimes “ they commit. They are thought of constantly aiding those that surrounds them commit crimes, and are punished without proofs for it, and we all wonder the reason why.Â
There is no other explanation of why they do it, but power and business. The more policies they create, the more zero tolerance gender specific policies they apply to both men and women, the more they are able to keep more people behind bars, The constant arrest of women, and the zero credibility that is given to them for crimes that men commit, for crimes were the complete story does not matter, but what matters is, the more people in jail, the better. Should a small mind and poor way of thinking! That is not how life should go for women.Â
The world has already taken so much from women, deprived them from their freedom, from their power, but specially it has taken a lot from women whose color of skin is dark. The numbers are much higher for women in jail in comparison to men, the numbers have multiplied and tripled in less than three decades, and these statistics reflect the environment and experiences that these women through and that many people do not really think about or worry at all. Some of these women are just trying to provide for their families, for their children and themselves, but once they are stigmatized and persecuted for no reason at all, these plans can go downhill. These are women that once they go behind bars, they are marked for life. The traumatic events that they experience prevents them from living a normal, happy life, prevents them for achieving what they are capable and deserve to achieve.
This system that women are living in, is preparing women to fail, and they are getting away with it but us as women have a mission to fight the system. It might not be out of nowhere but change will happen. It took women years to fight for the our right to voted, even longer for women to want equal rights, learn about our bodies, and decide over the decision of bringing a life into this unfair world. Although it took a very long period of time, we obtained some change, and if we keep fighting and educating others, we will one day be free in this unfair life and we will not longer call it anything but a fair world. Â
Reflection # 4 : Our Bodies, Our Crimes! 💪🏼✊🏻
A woman body has always being such a controversy! What we do or we don’t do with it ? Why we dress the way we do? Why we walk the way we walk! Why we choose NOT to bare children? Why we choose to abort those unwanted at times traumatic pregnancies? In addition to hundreds of questions that for centuries women have always been forced to answer and live to chose the correct answers in the eyes of society. What do I mean by choosing the correct answers ? Simply that women back in time, lived with their families, partner and specially society expectations, and abortions considering how big and controversial the topic is, has being always among many other topics, influenced by society ideals. In the reading Our bodies, Our Crimes the authors takes us in a historical bound, explaining how this controversial topic has change through time, but that women were connected with it, condemned for choosing a negative and soulless action as a solution for many factors that may lead to not wanting a child. The real question is who can say what is right or wrong ? Who can judge women by deciding what to do with their lives, bodies and minds? Why are women different due to their color of skin or ethnicity? Who says that women of one ethnicity and one race are the chosen group to bring kids into the world ? The simple answer is men, as we all read in Gender, Status, and Power, men make the laws that everyone mush obey, they have more wealth, more political power. All what they claim and categorize as wrong, is just to justify their power and specially maintain it.
Abortion has being only one more topic that men wanted to control, putting rules that never existed before, rules that created a dark image on women, and that divided women roles by their skin tones and founded a relationship between that and their rights to be mother or not to be. When before it was perfectly normal to not want to bare a child, not want a child that was not conceive with love but by force, to not bring a child to a world were they won’t be offer economic stability, to keep growing a family that already has numerous children and the parents have every right to decide when they cannot either afford it anymore or have the energy to do it no more, to bring a child to life when the mother itself it’s in a terrible situation at the moment, either economically, mentally or emotionally.
Just because men took the throne without a fight in the past, does not mean that they can keep it. They are not to judge those that were given the gift to bare children, they are not to judge when it’s the right time for the gifted person to decide to bring children to this world.

Reflection #3 🧠👀
- I have a strong belief about some of the behaviors and actions that have been done attempting to hurt and disrespect human beings, their bodies and their desires. I strongly believe that those actions come from those that in their mind only ignorance and madness prevail. Ignorance that has being growing inside their brain as parents and the society spoke to them, in many ways directly but also indirectly, receiving messages, commands and ques from those that surround them. Messages that have lead people to discriminate others, to discrimate women, even more women of color. Maddening ideas that have lead to reassign a person sex following the messages of what “normal” should be. At the end of the day when we see everything that has been done to women in the past, all the daily situations that they are exposed to, all the Sexual Harassment , the difficulty of finding Equal Pay Employment , Lack of Professional Opportunities, Deprived Help in Extreme Situations, creating Obstacles to those that are women and have a different ethnicity or race than white Anglo Americans ( as we read in Crenshaw research, women were denied shelter in extreme situation, for not speaking English correctly), all of these obstacles and situation that happen everyday, and the reality is that we are all humans, and race, ethnicity or social economic status are not aspect that constitute humans, these are societal build beliefs, that have place humans into categories, in order to control them, leading to practices such as discrimination, disrespected, inequality, violations of human rights and the actual humanity of a person.
This is why many already grow with these beliefs, but how can we fight those societal beliefs, that were created years ago ? Parents are at a disadvantage when it comes to teaching their kids social norms and good sentiments toward everyone equally, but how do they fight what society has been creating for years that at one point they will have to face and that they will learn when they step out of their homes. Although it seems hard is not impossible, little by little, ignorance is starting to become knowledge and acceptance, and as long as we spread knowledge, respect and love in the world, we are contributing to eliminate those ignorant beliefs that have doomed us to the society that we were and still are in a big part today.
Reflection #2
Sex Testing & Gender Formation
Can you imagine considering being normal and being one person your entire life, and then suddenly being told that you are not within the normal range of society and in other words you are unaware of who you are and what the nature of your body is ? Can you imagine training and practicing for what you love or learned to do, your entire life and then being told that you cannot longer perform because of who you were raised to be? Who you and your family believed you were and due to the nature of your body and hormonal imbalances or genital parts, you cannot longer pursue your goals or put in practice what you worked so passionately for ? Why is it wrong if a person wants to be different, or does not feel comfortable with the sex or gender they were assigned to since birth? That is exactly what is happening nowadays around the world. Society has being trained from the beginning of time to do gender, and we are forcing those beliefs in many fields of life, religion, schools, history, and our families, all of this “through human interaction, out of social life, and is the texture and order of that social life” ( Lorber, 1994). A line is created from young ages that teach children and society that males are the superior gender, they are dominant and females as the deviant and subordinate gender. Children learn to do gender before they learn to write and read correctly and that’s just sad. They are continuously taught specially in western cultures that the “normal” are either male or females and that anything different from that sex are part of an “abnormal” population and should be fixed. We see in many fields and aspects of life where that line is drawn, determining the jobs that females do, what they should study, how the should behave, what their intimate life should be and how their appearance should be, and that anything that is deviant in the nature eyes or our society is not accepted. Look at Dutee Chand, Stella Walsh, and MarĂa JosĂ© Patiño, all incredible athletes that were ready to make history, that trained and work hard, that were determined beside their socioeconomic status, lack of resources and difficulties that were big obstacles for their success, but little did they know that a bigger out of their hand obstacles was awaiting, that would cost them their career and achievements. All of these women were tested medically since they were male looking and were thought to be cheating in their athletic performance. Women whose privacy was violated after being test for being males, spreading the word after discovering that in females there might be an hormonal imbalance, were testosterone may be creating changes in the body shape and appearance of the athletes, discovering as well that some of them were intersex. They were banned and discredited as athletes, violated of their privacy and shamed publicly for discoveries that they had just made as well, and all of their hard work and credibility were thrown away. This situations should not be happening in these times, science is a field that has an explanation for what happens inside our body, how we develop, how we are born, but psychologically society can not tell a person who they should be or label people as different, for not wanting the sex or gender that they were born and raised with, and socially is incorrect to be exposing people for being psychologically different or wanting to be different. People are allow to be what they want to be, either accepting being intersex, or being transsexuals and transvestites, all of these which are a choice and a lifestyle that people should be able to follow as their hearts desire. Considering that their choices or biological structures should not be a subject of discrimination and determinants of their abilities and achievements that women or men are equally able to get, with hard work and determination.
NOT SAINTS. NOT WHORES. JUST WOMEN.
Just Women.
Its been difficult.  Reflection #1
I must say that it is difficult. It’s difficult to be born into a society with gender bias and stereotypes. It’s difficult for both women and men. Since the time a person is born they become victims of their gender, and expectations of what they are meant to be, either a boy or a girl. They start to fall into the categories of colors, blue or pink. As they grow they continue to be exposed to the same beliefs and attitudes of those that surround them and are constantly advising them to behave accordingly to their sex. Everywhere they go they become more exposed to guidelines and set of rules, which are supposed to guide their lives. Beside the guidelines, a line it starts to be drawn as well, creating differences between females and males, with favoritism and a better idealism toward males. Where they less expect, it they find those rules, in books, even in the illustrations of those books. Everywhere a person turns around, they find those rules, and it must be exhausting. It is exhausting! Having to listen to others all the time, and see portrayed in the media, in the literature, in history, how females and males should continue to be. For sure it is exhausting! But effort is being made, effort is being made and changes are occurring, changes that involve rebelling! Not listening to others, not follow the guidelines, people are beginning to be themselves. All sort of genders are flourishing in society, different sexes, people are fighting all that sexism and stereotyping and discrimination, that have been faced through centuries, is all finally coming to an end. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. But I must say it’s been difficult.

Thinking about reflection # 1 for class... men are not less of a man for being delicate or weak at times. One of topics pointed out in the reading, men have a harder time transitioning to what are known “ females attitudes or behaviors”, than females transitioning to doing what are taught to be male behaviors or attitudes. 🧠đź’
Rare Photos of Black Rosie the Riveters
During World War II, 600,000 African-American women entered the wartime workforce. Previously, black women’s work in the United States was largely limited to domestic service and agricultural work, and wartime industries meant new and better-paying opportunities – if they made it through the hiring process, that is. White women were the targets of the U.S. government’s propaganda efforts, as embodied in the lasting and lauded image of Rosie the Riveter.Though largely ignored in America’s popular history of World War II, black women’s important contributions in World War II factories, which weren’t always so welcoming, are stunningly captured in these comparably rare snapshots of black Rosie the Riveters.
