In the pub with Imre Hofbauer

The Other London by Imre Hofbauer was published in 1948 and presents a rather bleak picture of post-war London. He started his researches in the pub, and these atmospheric drawings followed.

Café, Valais, Tavistock Place, St Pancras by Peter Marshall, 1986

Café Valais was at 50 Tavistock Place, rather confusingly next to 74 Marchmont Street, and a Chinese Restaurant in Tavistock Place to its left. I think the café had closed when I made this picture, with its windows blocked by sheets of paper. I was attracted by the muted pinks and green and the lettering of its name, but would I think have preferred it without the two rounded concrete posts at the bottom of the picture. These have now gone from the pavement and the address has demoted to a pizza place.
