It felt like any other day as I rolled over under the sheets of mine and ___’s hotel bed. I was performing at a casino tonight on our summer tour. with All American Rejects and Dashboard Confessional. Since it was ___’s home state, she was able to make it while she was her visiting family. She hated being home alone while I was out on tour.
I reached my lanky arm out of the warmth across to her side to find it empty. It wasn’t out of the ordinary with our daughter, Gray, being a fussy five year old. It didn’t occur to me right away that today was actually my birthday.
It wasn’t something I liked spending a lot of time thinking about. I knew getting old was inevitable, but focusing on something I’m not in control of takes away from the beauty of living life.
Before I got too deep in my half awake thoughts, the door creaked open. I could sense the quick, little dips in the mattress next to my body, not bothering to acknowledge them. Gray started to jump up and down on the bed, landing right on my stomach, singing the Happy Birthday song the best she could.
I sat up in my bed with her still on me, lifting her up in both of my arms. I tossed her lightly onto the mattress next to me.
“That’s what you get you little monster,” I said while tickling her stomach. I could hear ___’s laugh lightly in the background. I looked up to see her standing in the doorway with a cupcake in hand, a single lit candle sticking out the top.
She walked over and kissed my cheek, “Happy birthday, babe.”
“Thank you, sweetheart. How nice of the both of you.”
Gray looked at the cupcake with the biggest smile on her face, this girl loved sugar.
“Thanks for giving me one candle, making me feel extra young as usual.”
“Oh hush. It’s all they had at the front desk.”
“I doubt you could fit my age on here anyway.”
Gray was still eying the cupcake, watching the flicker of the small flame.
“Would you like to do the honors, Gray?”
“No, it’s your day, Daddy.”
I took in a long exaggerated breath, making my daughter giggle and wife smile. I blew out the single candle quick.
“Sorry I couldn’t find an actual cake. It’s the best I could do not being at home.”
“It’s perfect, Darlin’, just like you.”
“Eww cooties,” Gray yelled, running out of the bedroom as fast as her little legs would take her.
“Yeah, John, cooties.” she said slapping my chest lightly.
“You know you love my cooties.”
“Do I now?” she said with a glint of lust in her eyes.
“We’re getting a sitter tonight, no questions asked.”
“Whatever you want, birthday boy.”
