I’m about to start my first DnD campaign with my club from school. We’re all beginners and I’m reeeally stressed because I’M managing the campaign because my friend with actual DnD experience was like “it’ll be good for youuu” and proceeded to dump it on me as “practice” but anyways do you have any tips for a first DnD campaign? Any elements, like it could be DMing, actually roleplaying, getting everyone immersed, like literally even what snacks to bring I’m desperate please help me 🙏🙏🙏
Hi!!!
I've never DMed a game, so I can offer you just some tips from a player point of view
Take them as a general help and not as law!!
as for DMing, you can go with your own story and setting, or you can look into pre-made adventures, to ease the planning part! Picking a pre-made adventure and adapting it to your style is also an option!
before the start of the campaign, you can do a "session 0" to check in with your players on things such as: - the story you're going to tell (genre, setting), you don't need to get into details ofc, but it can help setting the general vibe - what your players would be comfortable/uncomfortable with (triggers but also just general preferences) - what your players would like to see (i.e. combat every session, heavy roleplay, a mix of both, being all super cool, etc. etc.) - how much deadly the setting can be
if your players want the characters to already know each other, session 0 can be also used for sharing infos on PCs and/or NPCs
if they're all strangers at the start, you could try having a little oneshot with each player to help them fit into their character and have them get a first peek at your world
Once the game starts:
a little rail roading can help if the party is struggling with figuring out the next step - but usually it's a mix of telling your story and having the players go with the flow
a strong NO on your part is for when a character is disrupting the game rules or your setting rules; don't worry if things don't go as you had written them, as long as everyone is having fun! You're playing a weird play pretend coop game, not writing a book
as you're all beginners, a nice thing to do is checking in frequently to see if everyone's enjoying the game - this way you and your players can adjust either the course of the story or the playing style!
Hope this can still help!! Thanks for asking and also thank @jonesylium for suggesting most of the points fdgdh his english is better than mine
Last session notes
(and he probably includes himself into this)
we played our ritual newyear's secret santa oneshot and i got assigned an half-orc-half-elf city guard who can see ghosts (pyonic fighter) Of course i had to draw them a regulation hottie
i think i missed couple of years of these (here), i could do like a huge post with all of them soon as a fun trip down memory lane XD
i made a fake sticker page for marsilliam <3 sue me
from the bluesky trend of HardAngleFrieren, i present my artSona doing it.
