dark academia / skincare
• have a set routine that works so well you don’t have to change it. keep your holy grail product secret, it adds to the mystery!
• pharmacy vaseline is best for the lips. only apply twice or three times a day – this is what doctors recommend & it has saved me multiple times in winter. don’t bite or lick your lips no matter how dry they feel! wearing a (moisturizing) lipstick might help you not to touch your lips throughout the day. a metal tin of vaseline is far cooler looking than a plastic chapstick.
• use an spf (at least 30) to keep that ethereal impression of youth & to protect your skin from uva & uvb rays. wear it even on cloudy days! find one that works under makeup & doesn’t clog your pores. it can be difficult but once you find what works for you, stick to it.
• double cleanse, especially if you wear makeup. use an oil cleanser to take off makeup & a foaming cleanser to clean the skin after the makeup is gone. i currently only have one cleanser though, so you know, you do you & you do what works for you! again, make sure your products are non-comedogenic.
• i always use micellar water in the morning before i moisturize & put on makeup. it’s just a quick way to cleanse the face after the night – i personally avoid washing my face with a proper cleanser in the morning, which might be good for you too if you have dry, sensitive skin! micellar water is good for removing make up as well, but i wouldn’t count solely on it – always wash off makeup & pollution properly in the evening (and don’t use makeup wipes!) micellar water is also great for removing that lovely deep red lipstick that doesn’t seem to come off even in the shower.
• i like to use a toner with aha or bha, since i don’t think physically exfoliating the skin is a good idea (especially if the skin in question is very sensitive). i find this step helps me with my (mild) acne.
• if you like, go for an essence, a serum or a facial oil. when my skin was extremely dry, i used a (way too expensive) fig serum that really saved my skin. oils can easily clog your pores though & because i’m a minimalist at heart, i tend to not use any of these products. i feel like good cleaning & moisturizing is enough. these are just nice extras! nice bottles can be quite dark academia though, but there’s no need to spend all your money on skincare.
• wear a good moisturizer that is in accordance with your skin type. i wear a very thick cream because i have very dry skin. you might need to have a different moisturizer for each season, but have no more than four! you don’t need more products than your absolutely favourites. find a product you like that works under the makeup you might use & that doesn’t clog your pores or irritate your skin. avoid alcohols & fragrances. pharmacy brands are good here too.
• drink enough water. i know you’ve all heard this by now. i have an all black reusable water bottle that i think fits the aesthetic quite well!
• for skin concerns like acne or eczema, see a doctor! going on the pill definitely helped with my acne & a doctor can write you a prescription for a special cortisone cream for extreme dryness.
in anticipation of autumn, here are some of my own dark academia-inspired photos 🕯✨

Poem: To You, the One Who Needs the Push
I like when an article thumbnail features a pic of a woman conductor, as it is the closest I will get to living in a world where newspapers write feel-good human-interest stories about a local witch who is proud to show off her new spell.
