𝑨 𝑺𝑻𝑹𝑨𝑰𝑵𝑬𝑫 𝑾𝑯𝑬𝑬𝒁𝑬 escaped Jake 10 minutes into the practice session, catching the attention of his nearby teammates who shot him weird looks that he ignored. His side was hurting—painfully. Every shift, every move, ever slight twitch fucking hurt. His ribs—one broken—would shift with his every weight and getting down on the ground should’ve killed him but he held it together despite the tears stinging in his eyes and threatening to fall with the strong winds hitting his face—which was also the cause of why they were watering in the first place. His stomach growled and his throat was dry—no amount of water could make up for it. he had been chugging water down the whole school day, skipped lunch, barely ate any breakfast before receiving a beating from his father before he left for school.
The side of his face hurt but it was covered well either way foundation that he had stolen from his mother and his long hair covered it. The sunlight made his bleached blonde hair shine golden. The color was fading and his black hair was beginning to show at the roots, he’d have to color his hair again soon—if he had the money for it. Probably not.
Sunghoon sucked in a breath and Jungwon grimaced when Jake missed another shot from where they sat on the bench watching. Fourth shot this time in a row, unlikely of him. Ni-Ki snorted, muttering something incoherent under his breath that made Sunoo roll his eyes and fix his hair with his ring finger as he held the small mirror in his other hand, a small pout on his lips.
Heeseung who stood across the lacrosse field narrowed his eyes as he sipped his water, standing next to Jay who was fixing his gear. He took a large sip and moved the water around in his mouth, turning his attention to him and swallowed hard. “What the fuck is up with Jake today?” It came out harsher than intended but it was too late to take it back. But there was an undertone of irritation in Heeseung’s voice that made Jay look up from what he was doing. He blinked, staying silent for a good whole minute. Turning his head to where Jay was and his expression turned thoughtful.
He saw the stiffness in his childhood best friend’s body, like he was in pain despite keeping a perfectly straight face. Jay wasn’t stupid, he knew Jake better than he knew himself. He sighed, placing the crosse he was holding and stood up from the bench. “Guess he and a bad morning.” Heeseung raised an eyebrow, not convinced by how bad Jay’s joke was given the fact that they knew about Jake’s home situation all to well.
Heeseung didn’t press further and took another sip from his water, his eyes still trained on Jake as he missed yet another shot which made the coach blow his whistle. A sigh escaped Jay, his head lowering and his eyes closing before they opened again and his head lifted. An intrigued hum left Heeseung when he watched the coach signal Jake over with his finger, watching Jake’s approaching figure, the too straight shoulders and head held too high for someone who was clearly in a lot of pain but playing it off too perfectly like he wasn’t—like he was used to it, because he was used to it. A disgusting sight to see in the eyes of the people who knew him, really knew him.
“What was that, hm? You missing shots? That’s now how we play, Sim. That’s not how you play.” Coach hissed when Jake approached him. A muscle ticked in his jaw at his words but all he could do was give a curt nod. “Sorry, sir. It won’t happen again.” The coach scoffed loudly, gritting his teeth, “no fucking way it won’t happen again. Get your head straight, Jaeyun. We have a game to win in a few weeks.” He slammed the side of his head gently—like a pat—before telling him to get out of his sight since the practice was over.
Everyone gathered their stuff and headed back inside to the changing room to shower and get dressed before going home. Jake made his way over to his locker and sat down, removing his gloves slowly like he had all the time in the world whilst everyone was hurrying to take off their gears and clothes and hop into the shower.
Heeseung glanced at Jake as he pulled his shirt off, revealing his toned chest with subtle six-pack and muscles on his arms. Jake was too caught up and distracted with cracking his knuckles and neck, his eyes downcast. He shared a look with Jay who shrugged and shot him a look that said leave him alone and Heeseung did just that, too tired to be the usual asshole that he was. Making his way to the showers, leaving Jay alone with Jake.
Jay wanted to say something but knew better than to do it right now. He knew Jake needed space just this once and he was going to give him that so he also stripped and made his way to the showers. Leaving Jake alone in the changing room.
The distant sounds of the showers running and muffled conversation seemed to have reached his ears and snapped him out of whatever got him so detached. Jake slowly stood up, careful with his movements as he stripped. He counted the minutes precisely on how long he had before the others would return from their showers to get dressed. He grabbed his towel and went to the shower on the very far end, away from everyone else.
He hanged his towel and pulled the curtain shut, hand reaching for the handle of the shower and he turned it upward and then to the left for warm water. The hot scalding water should’ve made him jump and let out a sound but he didn’t, he remained quiet and moved the handle a bit to the right for cold water, wanting the change the warmth to a bit of cold—something that was bearable for all human beings.
He moved to stand under the shower head that was attached to the ceiling. Arms at sides, head lowered and eyes closed as he let the water run down his body. Hair growing wet. The bleached blonde hair growing dark to an almost very light brown color. His throat was still dry and his stomach was still empty but his appetite had already vanished long ago.
It didn’t take long for the place to quiet down. Everyone had left and he was all alone—perfect, just like how he always liked it.
Jake started first with washing his hair before moving to his body. Movements slow and careful. Especially around the bruised area on the side of his stomach—ugly purple and brown color. His father had pushed him hard against the marble counter in the kitchen multiple times repeatedly before stomping down on his chest—that was how one of his ribs had broken.
Moments later Jake turned off the shower and shook his head, probably deflecting another negative thought that crossed his mind. He grabbed the towel and wrapped it around his waist and pulled the curtain back. Now that was the first time he let out a scream—caught off guard.
“Ah, what the fuck!” He clutched the towel around his hips, eyes wide as he stared at Jay who was fully dressed and leaning against the wall with his arms crossed and foot against the wall. His expression was neutral but as his eyes dragged down his best friend’s chest, the neutral expression slowly turned concerned but before he could open his mouth, Jake had already walked away, back to the changing room.
His wet feet slapping against the floor as he approached his open locker with a bored but tired expression. Grabbing a fresh pair of boxers he pulled them on and removed the towel and began putting his clothes on.
“When?” Was all Jay said. He had followed him back into the changing room, arms still crossed over his chest. Jake shrugged as he pulled his pants up and buckled the belt, the clinking sound echoing in the empty room. “This morning before I left for school,” he answered casually, like it wasn’t a big deal. He pulled his shirt on and put on deodorant. “Barely hurts.”
Barely hurts? Barely hurts my ass Jay thought. He would’ve said it out loud if this had been the first ever time Jake’s father had hit him but it wasn’t so he kept his mouth shut about it. Deciding to change the subject instead as he took a step closer, “sleepover?”
Jake paused what he was doing and turned his head slowly to look at him, an eyebrow raised. “Sleepover? What are you? Five?” He scoffed, shaking his head and muttered something under his breath that Jay couldn’t make out. “You know what I meant. Sleep at my place tonight or crash at my dorm room, your choice. You look like you could use a good night’s sleep.” With that he grabbed his bag and left, leaving Jake standing there with an unreadable expression on his face.
He sniffed, shifting in his stance whilst considering the invitation. He could say no and go back home and most definitely get another beating and no sleep or he could accept the offer and sleep in Jay’s warm, soft comfortable bed and eat some delicious food and probably flip through some hot magazines and jerk off to them. Fuck, it was going to be easy, wasn’t it?
Jake packed the rest of his things and exited the changing room. Jay was patiently waiting for him with a smirk on his lips and he scoffed, “tsch, wipe that smirk off of your face.” He grumbled but the smirk only grew on the corner of Jay’s mouth as he tossed the car keys up into the air and caught them effortlessly as he walked.
This was going to be a long night…
