Money Wisdom and Coffee

I’ve had a tumblr for nearly ten years. It been nearly completely neglected for the majority of that time. But I’ve had an idea for a while about doing short videos of the Money Wisdom quotes that appear on my main blog. There’s nearly 500 of them. And many are well worth revisiting. So this post marks the point between my old tumblr and my new.

I did delete a whole bunch of posts (mostly reposts of pictures and the like) but in going through the site I found a few really old posts on money burning. I’ve kept those.... they’re the twenty or so posts that come before this one, chronologically. In fact, I finally found the post where I talk about doubling the amount of money I burn each year. I’d imagined that I’d done this on my main blog, but could never find it. It’s called Natural Conclusion from 28th Oct 2008 - according to it I should be burning £6400 this year!

Its the 23rd February as I write. So, what with the 23rd being my favourite day in the month for doing stuff, I thought it time to do a little appraisal of where we're at and where we're going - by we're I mean you, me, and MyOP. First, and most importantly. I've put a new maxi blog post up today. I wrote it in January, but wanted to save it until the 23rd. It is, of course, about money. I hope you like it. Second. I'm going to be making a few minor changes to my websites. Nothing major. I won't bore you with them here, I'll just do them and let you know as and when. I've not managed to keep the promise I made to have the rss feed gadget ready for 23rd Feb. Sorry. Third. On my maxiblog there will now be two main subjects for posts. Money (no surprises there) and something called Futurestar. Its early days yet for this but it allows me to write freely about money, music and the internet. I don't feel that comfortable with my 'digital evolution' post, nor my reasons for writing it. It might be a fault of mine, but I always like to be able to feel that what I write can stand up to scrutiny, now and in the future. I feel that about the Money stuff - if I have a specialist subject, I guess it'd be Money. Futurestar is fiction, so it affords me some latitude. I still of course reserve the right to write about anything at anytime. Fourth. I've given up on the idea of making a fortune through advertising. My little experiment with Google Adwords yielded precisely zero dollars. My idea now is that at some point in the future I'll sell you a hard copy of the stuff I'm writing. Please don't hold your breath. Fifth. The miniblog is doing alright I think. I've been a bit lax of late, but there's been some lovely stuff gone up. One of the things I want the miniblog to be is an art resource - for me, but to shared with you. I got a lovely 32" LCD TV for xmas. I'm determined that one or two evenings a month I can sit down with wife and view the pieces I've selected for the miniblog, instead of having mindless drivel selected for me by Phil E. Stein shoved into my eyeballs and lugholes. Its a just a little dig at 'The Man', but its a start. Sixth. I'm starting my own religion. I'm looking for disciples. More to follow in coming months. But you can start getting excited now.

Happy New Year !

I confess I have been secretly working on my blog. But then I'm always *working* on it. Perhaps of more interest to my stalwart readers is that I'm going to try to stop *working* on it and start actually doing it (again). The date I've set in my mind to stop fiddling and start doing is 23rd Jan 2009. I'll be fiddling on the QT after this but you don't need to know that.

Seriously though. I do actually want to build a readership, have feedback etc. And I'm very aware that people get fed up with the stop and start nosense - I know I do. All I can do is apologise. Sorry. And promise that I will do better.

Blog blog blog again

Another big gap in my blog. And its here with tumblr that I seem to be having most issues. I don't want to write just so that something - anything - goes up. Seems pointless to me. I also need to be able to maintain a miniblog while I'm working and I'm really pushed for time.

I've been thinking about going to posterous. But that maybe just another prevarication. Tumblr does everything I need. My latest thought on content for my miniblog is that I need to make much more use of my favorite music, videos, pictures. If I pick say, a music video that is playing in my mind, or a picture I think says something important for that moment, or a piece of music that is enhancing my day - that's got to be better than week upon week of silence. And its got to be better than the self-indulgent twaddle I'm writing now about my blogs. And if I feel the need to write something that ain't a maxiblog, but needs saying, then I can just do it. After all, its the internet - it can carry all sorts of media.

Microblogging has been pulsing strongly for me. I'm going to re-do my twitter maxiblog post.

Maxiblogging has been non existant. But. I think I've really got in the groove with how and what I want to write about. Feeling good about this actually. Just need to get on.

Anyway, let's hope that this is the last blog, blog, blog post for a while.

The Natural Conclusion

I should really get out for a walk every day. The picture doesn't show it too well, but you can just see about wembley stadium. It dominates the landscape around where I live.

Anyway, a thought has been wandering round my mind as I've been trying to zone into my next maxiblog post. If I double(ish) my money each year, where will it lead?

Its a sunny(ish) day here in NW London. I've just been for a walk in the park. Now back online. In the last couple of weeks I've enjoyed a few days like this. Very nice.

I've not been hustling for driving work too much because I have 32 days of work coming up. So I've been pleased to spend a week or two lying low and doing work on my blogs. It'll be a good test for me to see if I can keep up the postings while I'm away.

I feel like I've got into my groove a bit with all things bloggage. Except maybe for this Tumblr thing. I'm still finding my voice here, I think - I'm certainly still trying to find an audience! lol. But the maxiblog is feeling much better with the two meta themes (An Idiots guide to Money, and How I use the Internet) plus I can chuck in the odd post or two on any other subject as and when I feel the need. The microblog has been the real revelation. Twitter is where its at for the moment.

On the money burning thing. Question Time was on the tv - they were discussing what someone had said about the economy and immigration. Basically the idea that when the economy goes down racial (or immigration) tensions rise. Jo Swinson from the Lib Dems was on it - I shared a few classes with her at the LSE. She and the other members of the panel said "Blah, blah, blah.....". Normal bollocks. It was clear though - largely from the audience reaction - that people are worried. My take is that its our relationship with money that needs a radical change. Racial/Religious and all the other 'you're different from me' tensions will exist in society as long as they exist in us. The state uses its power to suppress them, just like we do. When the state is bereft of power (i.e. money) the tensions exhibit themselves and they're magnified by the media. If we can get a better understanding of that money stuff, life would be easier and nicer for everyone.

Oh, and I think I've decided (but I reserve the right to change my mind !). Next year it'll be a £50. The loveliness of first burning Charles Darwin, then Adam Smith, and then Issac Newton will be too much for me to resist. I'm looking forward to the 23rd October 2009.

Sacrament

A funny evening. I very much enjoyed my little ritual sacrifice.

A little earlier in the evening our stupid cat bought a mouse in and it escaped. Our landlord doesn't know we have a cat. I don't really like pets. We ended up with him because he faced certain death and the combined might of my mother, wife, and daughter persuaded me that I should tkae him in. Anyway, my offspring laid a humane trap for the mouse including some cheese. When the humane plan got to boring for me to bear, we chucked the cat in the kitchen. He ate the cheese.

The ritual was enjoyable and rewarding. I'm up for doing it next year. Nedd to decide on £40 or £50.

Adam Smith up in Flames

I'm looking forward to my ritual sacrifice tonight. I've read different opinions on the legality of what I'm about to do. Whatever, I don't think Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II or Mr Brown will be too worried about it. And, as I've explained, its a good thing to do.

I'm going to video my sacrifice, and its my intention to put it onto Youtube asap. I'll embed it here, of course. Please do your own sacrifice if you feel the slightest bit inclined. It feels good. And of course, if you decide to record it do send me your video. I'll stick it on Youtube and embed it here too.

This is as close to a sacrement as I get in this modern life. I'd love not to be the only person in the world who does it.

The greatest artistic statement of the C20th.

This video show the K-Foundation (Bill Drummond, Jimmy Cauty, Gimpo) on the 23rd August 1994 burning £1 million in cash on the island of Jura (just off the Scottish Coast).

Last year on 23rd October I burnt a tenner. This year I'm going to burn £20. I'll video it for you.

Bashing the bankers

This morning I wached an item on Matthew Wright's C5 talk show about the financial crisis. The general consensus seemed to be that everyone - panel and callers - were jolly cross with the bankers. They blamed the bankers for the current crisis and felt it was unfair that the taxpayer was having to bail out the banks. They also wanted the bankers punished - they wanted heads to roll.

I also caught some of Chris Evan's radio show whilst on my way back from Cardiff yesterday. I've never been his biggest fan, but he made great point - he said that this week feels like a bit of a party week. People are confused about the financial crisis and are wondering if its all worth it - why work all your life to earn money, save hard, be prudent, when trillions can be created or disappear overnight seemly under no-ones control? When you feel like this, a tried and tested remedy is to get drunk and have fun. People do that in war time to, and they have a lot more sex.

So, its not all bad news ;o)

Blog blog blog again

I'm out on tour with a young artist called Sam Beeton at the moment. So I'm writing this post from my hotel room rather than the dining table at home. Nevertheless, I'm still really disappointed with the infrequency of my posts - in particular my maxi blog posts. I feel under pressure to find a rhythm to my postings. Even my micro blog suffered last week with no updates in the later half of the week.

I'm tempted to set myself the goal of doing one maxi blog post a week. Maybe the discipline would help me to get in the groove. On the other hand, I really don't want to post just for the sake of posting. Whose going to want to read something that was put up simply because it adhered to my schedule? It annoys me that I've fallen into the same trap as so many other bloggers - I post infrequently, and I post (here) at least, about bloody blogging !

I definately do want to share a few things with you. I want to show you how I use the internet. I don't make any great claim to be particularly advanced - but I'm aware that for many people their daily internet experiance involves the Google or Yahoo search page, hotmail, and one or two frequently visited websites (and porn). I want to evangelise a little about rss feeds and the like.

But I also want to be able to give my perspective on things that are happening in the world. Maybe this is my stumbling block. I guess I'm a little worried that the people I drive for will read the stuff I write and sack the freak that wrote it - family to support and all that. Hmmmm. I'll think on it.
