Late on New Year’s Eve, we rescued a frog from the middle of the road. Before we released it, I decided to have an impromptu photo session. I suppose there’s no “Year of the Frog” on the Chinese calendar to make this post thematically appropriate, but there is also no way I’m dragging a monkey into the house. Happy 2016, everyone!
After a long period of silence, and for the first time since we had arrived, Josephine looked right at us through the glass. We had watched for minutes as she groomed herself and paid decidedly little attention to the cries of excited children that had come to visit. The glass separating us was as dirty on our side as on Josephine’s, covered with the hand-prints (and possibly face-prints) of overeager visitors. Humorously, the dirty smears were less dense the higher up the glass they went, implying the wisdom of age gradually setting in. The blurred barrier made it difficult to get any photos at all, but thankfully Josephine was an excellent model, and she sat down just far enough from the glass that I was able to snap a few shots before we had to leave.

Despite being sold as pets, the diet of a pygmy marmoset can be difficult to reproduce outside of its natural environment, and it’s believed to be psychologically and developmentally detrimental for them to grow from infancy without the social structure found in their natural, multiple-member, non-human community.
Geometry in Motion: 10 Simple and Stunning Gifs by Dave Whyte
Dave Whyte, an Ireland based PhD student, creates oddly satisfying Gifs based on mathematical data. I recently stumbled upon his work on Tumblr and I was hooked right away. His geometric Gifs are purely mesmerising. I can sit and watch them all day.
Dave creates these Gifs using an open-source coding language called Processing. After creating a new Gif, he then shares the source code openly on Github.

95 Years Later: Remembering the Sticky Horror of the Boston Molasses Flood
There is no shortage of forgotten disasters, but few rival the 1919 Great Boston Molasses Disaster in the scope of its strangeness and the small memory of it in the place it totally destroyed.
Today is the 95th anniversary of the January 15, 1919 catastrophe, when a massive steel tank holding some 26 million pounds of molasses broken open, crashing a wave of sticky substance stretching up to 25 feet tall and 160 feet wide. It’s a story that starts as an amusing anecdote — a sugary sea spreading through the streets — but quickly turns into a nightmare of almost unimaginable proportions. Moving at 35 miles per hour, the wave engulfed absolutely everything in its path, including people who were strolling through the afternoon streets on an unusually warm day. The legs of the elevated tracks were broken, houses and buildings were obliterated into shards, horses, as reported by the Boston Post, “died like so many flies on sticky fly paper.”
In the aftermath, 21 people were dead, 150 injured, and rescue was exceeding slow, as of course molasses movement is known to be. The molasses seeped into the infrastructure, and even now on hot days people in the North End area claim to smell a whiff of molasses in the air. The disaster was at first blamed on anarchists — as disasters in early 20th century America tended to be — but was later revealed to be shoddy construction.
