Skateboarding In A Global Pandemic
This obsession with everyone’s thoughts and behavior seems to suggest a desire for a moral code, a desire for certainty in an uncertain world, and when I have asked readers (or followers, who are generally not one and the same) to tell me what they want from me as a writer, more often than not it’s help with fighting the ills I point out all the time: capitalism, extractive consumption. I hope I haven’t given the perspective that I have these things figured out for myself. I do not. We are all subject to them, and we all must do our best.

By now, Silent Generation aside, the question has occurred to you: Why does this woman seem so unfazed by all this horrible crap? Well, I am shallower than most people. I do not dwell on the past. I feel greater empathy for others than for myself. I do not try to control everything.

A week ago, a co-worker and I were finishing an on-site catering gig for a tech company in Silicon Valley — the type of client who makes up the majority of our gigs and, therefore, our income. My profanity was a result of having just received a text from our boss that two gigs had been canceled and, with them, my hourly shifts, due to fears of COVID-19.

In books written for girls there is almost always a glamorous best friend, luminous and sophisticated, with long legs and great hair and a terrible attitude. She is usually much richer or poorer than the middle-class, middle of the road heroine; either way, her parents aren’t often around. She gets into trouble with boys, smokes cigarettes, drinks beer, and loves our narrator fiercely, tribally, the way teenage girls actually do. I grew up looking out for those girls, and found them all around me.

I wrote something that started to be about this four years ago, but that post sort of swerves off the question of the charismatic best frien
Exotic, mysterious, enigmatic, wooden, robotic, androgynous. Words that have been used to describe Keanu—so often, for so many years, they’re the tired clichés of any discourse around him. But what’s not discussed in the mainstream is how these are also highly racialized descriptions, particularly around Asian Americans, and Asian masculinities. As a kid I might not have immediately racialized Keanu, but it’s never been a secret from the public. Far from it. And much smarter people than me have argued that his race has affected how critics understand him and his work.

I had reached the point of diminishing returns. I wanted to quit Twitter, but my fingers were as if possessed, typing command+n, tw, return at any lull in the workday, letting autofill take care of the rest... More than once I asked a friend to change my password and lock me out of my account. Weeks would go by without incident, sometimes months, but then a protest would break out, or my hometown would be on fire, and the old media was too slow with the news. I’d click Forgot password?, have a link sent to email, log on, catch up, lose my mind, and repeat the process.

This is my third novel, yet I've never written a book this way before—plotted it carefully, in advance, using a detailed outline that I revised continually. I've never hoarded my own work just for myself, never allowed myself to feel greedy about keeping it private until I was damn good and ready to share it.

Phoenix men refer to men who come from humble beginnings but make it to the middle or upper classes through hard work, like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Under China’s patriarchal tradition, men are often expected to support their poorer extended families. Many wealthy urban women are reluctant to date phoenix men because of these financial obligations to the extended family.
