Becoming a TV Writer
Welcome to THE 100 Season 3! Now that we’re on hiatus, I’ve finally had a chance to dig back into my inbox and a question I’ve gotten from a few people is how I became a TV writer. Firstly, though, I strongly recommend the @childrenoftendu: Javi and Jose are TV veterans (not to mention lovely people) with decades of experience between them, and they have generously captured all that learning for you for FREE in their entertaining and informative podcasts. A must-listen for anyone interested in TV writing. Seriously. Go get them all right now.
The tl;dr version of my path is that I’m a lifelong writer, a drama major in college who focused on playwriting. A love of computer games led to a left turn into technology, where I worked for years as a game writer, designer, and producer until getting accepted into the Warner Bros. Television Writers’ Workshop. That’s how I landed my first job in TV and I’ve made my living as a screenwriter ever since.
There’s more to my story, of course, but in my experience when people ask “How did you become a writer?” they’re really asking “How do I become a writer?” so I figured I’d answer that too.
Pretty much every working writer you’ll talk to has a completely different story on how they got where they are. That’s both the good news and bad news: there’s no one set path to breaking into Hollywood. You need to write. A lot. And rewrite. A lot. Seems obvious, but LA is full of “aspiring writers” who’ve never written anything, never finished anything, or never bothered to do the hard and sometimes painful work of getting feedback and shaping a piece of material into something worthy of a busy agent/executive/showrunner’s attention. So do that. Writing is a skill and a craft and takes practice. You must put in the hours.
You’ll also need access to someone willing to read what you’ve written, someone who can give you a job or help get you one. That can mean getting accepted into a writing fellowship like I did, or having your script read by a friend who’s an agent’s assistant and recommends you to their boss, or finding a mentor in the business (college alumni networks are good for this), or working in the writers’ office of a TV show and a senior writer eventually asks, “So, what are you working on?”
Whatever the particulars, common elements for success in entertainment include hard work, talent, luck, and persistence. Also being a decent person, but I really shouldn’t have to call that out (and yet…). Confidence is not the same as arrogance. Being too aggressive will hurt you. So will being too timid. So will thinking that you deserve a job in the industry, because you’ve waited X years or just really really want it. It’s a hard fact, but Hollywood doesn’t owe any of us anything. We have to constantly earn its favor.
One of the biggest myths in Hollywood is that all it takes is one big break and you’re set. You do need that first door to open, of course, but after that you have to break in over and over again. Every staffing job, every open writing assignment, every pilot pitch. So after signing up to the new more expensive @netflix I finally have gotten to see some new 4K content on my 65” tv. Looks good but unless you sit really close to it you just can’t tell. Ridiculous to say it but something I have repeated at my 4k seminars frequently. You need a REALLY big TV to benefit from 4K or sit super close. Then of course if what you are watching is good you don’t notice the picture difference anyway! :)

I’m going to explain this once so that everyone can get the full story.
A few weeks ago, Matthew Santoro and I were nominated in a category called “Top Social Media Moment 2014” as part of the Canadian Screen Awards #AcademySocial event. He was nominated with his “Top 10 Urban Legends” video and I was nominated with “My D*ck”. Lilly Singh and Evan Fong were also nominated. I was in Egypt when I found out, via a tweet from Much (that included all of us). I wasn’t sent any additional information throughout the process.
The winner of that category was to be determined by public vote. Matt took that round, with a huge number of votes, and we all expected that that would be the end of voting.
We showed up to #AcademySocial with the assumption that Matt had already won an award. As it turned out, there would be another round of voting, with more candidates (they took the Top 2 from multiple rounds).
They made an announcement at the event to “keep voting” so I did, which is why I got a head start. Of course, once Matt found out that there was another round of voting, he won. They announced that he won, and we all went home.
The next day, Matt uploaded [this video] where he basically implies that the competition was rigged in my favour and that I somehow almost cheated him out of his award. So his audience left slanderous comments about me on his video, on my videos, and also ‘disliked’ a few of my most recent ones.
Well, as we discovered today, [the rules clearly state] that there would be two rounds of voting. This information was publicly available all along. Neither of us knew it, but it was there. The second round of voting was not a secret. They made it known weeks in advance, and on the night of the event.
I asked Matt to clear this up with his audience, and you can be the judge of if he did a good job of that.
WHY DO I CARE?
1- Whether it was his intention or not, I’m being accused of something I didn’t do. And if I actually cheated somehow, wouldn’t I have cheated to WIN?!
2- This morning I had 0 dislikes on Episode 1 of my Egypt series, and now I have 23. The YouTube algorithm already doesn’t like me, and this is now something I’m going to have to explain to Contiki. A video that I’m really proud of has a string of hate comments and dislikes that are unrelated to the content of the video.
3- Now Matt and his girlfriend Nicole are telling me to “let it go” and that “trolls troll” but literally the only reason why anyone is talking about me is because they implied that I cheated…?
4- Matt is now censoring comments about me, but the video where he implies that I cheated is still online.
I’m not even asking for an apology but it would be great if they’d make a sincere effort to tell their audience that they were wrong. There was no conspiracy, no surprise voting, no favouritism. And most importantly, no real reason to hate on me. If they want to be angry at someone, it should be the Academy for not being more clear about the process.
People are going to pit us against each other in a voting situation, but what we do on YouTube is NOT a competition. If any of us can succeed, it’s good for all of us. So this “army” mentality is troubling.
I’ve been in this game long enough to know when I need to keep my mouth shut. But I care about my reputation, and if one of my peers is responsible for negative comments about me, I’m going to take things seriously. Again his video implying that I did anything wrong is still online.
I don’t have the biggest audience, so I’m truly honoured and grateful to be recognized for the work that I do. I was the smallest channel in our category and I still managed to come in second place. That is an accomplishment.
At the end of the day, I’m exactly where I want to be: I’m travelling, I’m making content that I’m proud of, I’m healthy, I’m making enough money, and I have so much love in my life. Tons of people have come out in support of me, and that makes me feel like I’m the real winner here.
